Strange internet behaviour [resolved]

Hello guys,
Im usually a slackware user and this is my first time using arch, so far i think its great.i love the speed and package system.
However ive got a slight problem with my internet.

I can ping websites (google.com etc) and download packages with pacman.
I can also browse websites using the 'links' web browser.

However, i downloaded firefox, it ran fine etc apart from i couldnt access any sites, so then i tried opera. same problem.
BUT if i access the site first in 'links' then try it in opera it loads up.

Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks
Kane

Re: Strange internet behaviour [resolved]

weird :-o .. i haven't had this myself, but maybe someone else has... in either case maybe an error log would be helpful ...

firefox > ff.log

and post it here if anything is printed to ff.log

hm, udp port unreachable. Are you behind a NAT-Router, using a software firewall/iptables or something?

Haven't been here in a while. Still rocking Arch. smile

Re: Strange internet behaviour [resolved]

The fact that you can browse with links makes me thing that there is nothing wrong witht the firewall nor with your router.
I wonder if you got a corrupted firefox package.
Try downloading the package from mozilla.org and install it . That is the way I have allways done it (firefox and thunderbird are the only two packages I do not use from the repository) and have never had a problem.

Re: Strange internet behaviour [resolved]

i have tried opera too .... so i thought it would be unlikely to have 2 corrupt packages?

my slackware install is 10.1 which uses the 2.4 kernel, i tried installing arch with the 2.4 kernel just to make sure it wasnt 2.6 causing the problem, but with the 2.4 it wouldnt detect my network connections/ports, (onboard nforce2)

also thinking about it, when i tried the xubuntu live cd, that was probably a 2.6 kernel right? and i had the exact same results,i could ping anything i liked, but couldnt use the browser to access it.

so im confused now lol.

anyone got any suggestions of how i could get my network to work using the 2.4 kernel?

cheers
Kane

Re: Strange internet behaviour [resolved]

I'm just taking a stab in the dark but it might be a permissions thing.  I felt I might have had this problem before

Can you access sites running firefox as root?

Re: Strange internet behaviour [resolved]

try typing about:config into firefox..
modify network.dns.disableIPv6 to true instead of the default of false. Restart firefox.

See if that helps.

Re: Strange internet behaviour [resolved]

i know it was a bad idea! lol

but thanks cactus ur fix worked smile im sure i tried that before and didnt have any results tho.

although im logged in as a proper user now so if thats made a difference or not i dont know.

thanks for all ur help though everyone smile im so happy now lol, i can get round to configuring my new arch system.

even though ive had problems, im already loving it more than slackware, purely because of pacman lol.
