GRUB Not Honoring Last Used Kernel and 31_Hold_Shift Script

I am trying to adjust my GRUB settings to make it so the GRUB menu is skipped unless I hold the Shift key during boot. I also want to boot using the last kernel I used (last used kernel is now the default). I can skip the GRUB menu, but I have not been able to make the 31_hold_shift script from the wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GR … _held_down) working nor the method to recall the previous entry (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GR … ious_entry). I attempted to follow this guide: "https://askubuntu.com/a/157940" because I thought that maybe I needed to add a 1 second to the timeout so my computer could recognize the keypress but I had the same result.
My /etc/grub.d/31_Hold_Shift file is:

I have 3 kernels installed: linux, linux-lts, and linux-zen. Linux-zen became the default once I installed it, before the default was linux.
