[SOLVED] Widget in bottom panel refuse to launch programs

Hi, I'm back to linux after few years. First time in Arch and loving it so far. I have only met few minor issues such as this one. I believe I'm missing something in the kde department since I didn't install kde-applications and went the hard way of installing only the plasma-desktop and adding the tools and programs I really needed.

Anyway, it happens that when I try to hit any of the widget in my bottom panel (browser, terminal, writer...) kde spits out a strange error and says I don't have the permissions. If I link the same widgets to the desktop I can launch the programs perfectly fine.

Hope it's all clear, here are the pics of the errors. This is right after I hit the icon/widget

https://imgur.com/1xvFnDIl.jpg

...so I hit continue and...

https://imgur.com/Nj46fUFl.jpg

And these are the permission as shown by the "properties" of the widget itself

https://imgur.com/TT9b66yl.jpg

and via bash

https://imgur.com/wc5Xnval.jpg

As you can see I am the owner and have all the permission needed, and the files/widgets are executable.

I'm not sure if it was your originals, or the edits a moderator had to do, but none of your links work.  Please edit your post to include working links to images if they are really needed, or actual output for anything in a terminal (you refer to one of the images as being "via bash", if it is command line output include it here in code tags).

Uhmmm... ok so the limitation for the images is 50k and mine where about 55 to 65k so the mod edited them +_+

Here is a link to imgur then: https://imgur.com/a/2xgdxp7

Re: [SOLVED] Widget in bottom panel refuse to launch programs

The rules are both for file size and actual image (pixel) size.  Some of your images were several orders of magnitute over the limits on either count.  Your images were not 55-65K, one of them is 581.5K - I'm not sure why you'd feel a need to lie about an easily verifiable fact for no purpose but to express disdain and disrespect for our community standards.  There was no harm in including big images in your first post when you didn't know the rules, but this follow up is not a good way to introduce yourself to a community.

Also, as requested, if you believe the terminal output is relevant, post it as text in code tags.  Do not post images (or links to images) of text.

On your actual issue, please describe how you start your GUI session.  Can I assume this is running under X (not wayland)?  If so, do you use a display manager or startx?  If it's X, please post your Xorg log for that session in code tags.

Re: [SOLVED] Widget in bottom panel refuse to launch programs

Ok i fixed it editing /etc/sudoers and enabling all users in the wheel group to launch sudo. I have no idea why that line is commented out since the wheel group should be exactly the one of those able to run sudo commands.

Re: [SOLVED] Widget in bottom panel refuse to launch programs

No, that's all wrong.  First wheel is just an arbitrary name - if you don't configure sudo it will not magically allow that group name to run commands as root.

But much more importantly, you should not be running X11 programs as root or with sudo.  Where is the "sudo" coming from?  Did you put that in your local desktop files?  If so, that's extremely dangerous.

What instructions were you following when you first installed this system?

"UNIX is simple and coherent" - Dennis Ritchie; "GNU's Not Unix" - Richard Stallman

Re: [SOLVED] Widget in bottom panel refuse to launch programs

I'm not running anything as root, except the bash (obviously after launching konsole(or similar) as user, but I'd like to specify this one too in case there was even a doubt). I installed following the wiki and my humble experience of 20-ish years of linux addiction (that includes several years of 'hiatus'). I edited /etc/sudoers for another problem I had in the shell, that told me specifically to add my user to those able to run sudo. So I did, and it fixed this issue too.

Re: [SOLVED] Widget in bottom panel refuse to launch programs

If you're not launching the process as root/sudo then why would editing the sudo capabilities have any impact here?

Launch one from the panel and check

ps aux | grep konsole
