Login Incorrect [SOLVED]

After an upgrade yesterday on my MSI Laptop, I can't login as usual (text mode, no display manager). My usual user AND root both fail with "Login Incorrect" response.
I tried single user (adding "s" in GRUB) and I can access the system (and it accepts the root password!!!). I changed there my normal user password and tried again, with no success. If I write the password as user name it appears correct, so, it's not a keyboard issue.
Another thing I did before the problem was increasing GRUB font size. I mention this for the sake of completitude.
This is the first time I see this odd behaviour. This laptop has been running Arch for almost a decade. And I don't know what else to do.
Any suggestions welcome.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Login Incorrect [SOLVED]

Check whether you have unhandled .pacnew files in /etc/pam.d and replace relevant files with their .pacnew versions. The latest pam upgrades removed some deprecated modules, and if you (or some utility) changed relevant files pacman will have created .pacnew files instead of outright overwritting the files which might lead to pam trying to load unknown modules.

for some other recent examples of this issue.
