Issues between iwlwifi and Intel Cannon Point-LP CNVi Wireless Adapter

Hi!

Yesterday my wireless adapter stopped working out of nowhere, I wasn't doing updates, just using my notebook for work (attacched to a different wireless network, if it is relevant).
Since yesterday, the iwlwifi module crashes and the wireless interface does not show up.

If it can be useful, after the initial problem I searched the forums and found someone suggesting to add the intel_iommu=off kernel parameter, so I did and it worked again for other 10 minutes.
After that I experienced some system lag and wifi instability, then it died again and the kernel parameter had no effect anymore.

My kernel version is 5.8.5, a friend suggested to try the lts kernel as well (version 5.4.61) but I got the same problem with a different log.

This is the output of lspci, my notebook is a 2019 Asus Zenbook (UX333FN).

I am asking since similar issues are for older versions of the kernel and now marked as solved, which seems not to be my case.
I also found this https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/65638 which seems related to my issue.

Do you have any advice? Is there a way to rule out hardware damage?
Thanks

Re: Issues between iwlwifi and Intel Cannon Point-LP CNVi Wireless Adapter

I can confirm similar issue. Different card, no updates and did not gracefully woke up from sleep giving similar series of errors. Device was soft-blocked after crash, but had to reboot to unblock and get device working again. No issues in Windows.

Re: Issues between iwlwifi and Intel Cannon Point-LP CNVi Wireless Adapter

Did you have any luck resolving it? I have the same issue on my Thinxpad X1 Extreme. I managed to update my linux over ethernet, but the latest update still has the issue (5.8.13)

Re: Issues between iwlwifi and Intel Cannon Point-LP CNVi Wireless Adapter

Can you try with linux-llvm from the AUR?
I suspect that this may be due to a compiler bug in gcc 10.2, which would also explain why using a an earlier kernel fixed the issue for some in the past but not now that kernels are built with gcc 10.2
I was also having unpredictable seemingly random problems with iwlwifi. Using linux-llvm kernel fixed this.
And then there is this bug https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/68071 which looks a likely candidate for the cause.

Re: Issues between iwlwifi and Intel Cannon Point-LP CNVi Wireless Adapter

Hello thank you for your suggestion - after compiling and using the linux-llvm kernel I am getting a different error (below). My kernel entris file has the Intel microcode package in it intel-ucode.img Do I need to recompile the intel-ucode package too with LLVM? If so is there any documentation that I could refer to?

Thanks again for all the help

Re: Issues between iwlwifi and Intel Cannon Point-LP CNVi Wireless Adapter

I also have the same exact issue as the first post, on an Asus UX450FD ( with Intel Cannon Point-LP CNVi Jefferson Peak 9560 AC) - same crash and log with card blocking itself and needing a full power cycle.

I could quick fix it fix by setting the usb power control of the bluetooth to "on" instead of "auto" (noticing that trying to remove an old usb fix made this issue pop up and that usually the bluetooth was going down with the wifi in a pretty much catastrophic way with the port not responding to setup adress). I will try to test the llvm kernel too. This issue is quite painfull.

For the SecBoot issue mohangk, it seems that the card is an unstable state after crash, usually a full power cycle with pluging / unpluging charger and shutdown fix it on my computer.

Re: Issues between iwlwifi and Intel Cannon Point-LP CNVi Wireless Adapter

Hi there,

same issue here, it happened between yesterday night and this morning.
My laptop was in sleep mode, when i recovered it the interface was there but wasn't responding.

After reboot the driver couldn't load the firmware, and the interface didn't show up anymore.

There were no packages update when the issue happened, and now my system is up to date.

Any clues?

Re: Issues between iwlwifi and Intel Cannon Point-LP CNVi Wireless Adapter

Hi,I met this trouble 2 weeks ago,and it really made me upset, and I still finally smoothed it out,but I only know the general method ,the details still need to research.
My kernel is 5.10.6, which update  from 4.9.10, my wireless card is Intel wireless 7260, firmware is the latest  iwlwifi-7260-17-321.ucode ; I check the soure code of 5.10.6's /drivers/wireless/intel/iwlwifi, and found that something wrong with pcie's rx.c, the IRQ handler was not called, which should called by DMA that has a virtual address buffer. after a long time search on Archlinux, I guess it should be the problem with virtual device and PCI, so I tried to add some configuration at the virtualization drivers, virtio drivers ,vDPA drivers and VHost drivers ,you can try to add all the configurations , and then it works ,I can load firmware . remmeber don't add configuration of IOMMU Hardware suport.

Re: Issues between iwlwifi and Intel Cannon Point-LP CNVi Wireless Adapter

Hi everyone,

in my case it was some hardware issue. I solved by sending the notebook to Asus for repair.
The wireless interface was also broken on Windows.

They didn't give me details about the repair, but I know for sure that they opened the notebook.

For me "power drain" did help.
see here for details https://support.lenovo.com/sv/en/troubleshoot/lpt000352

I disabled battery in bios for addition.
