HP EliteBook 8540p kernel panics when installing packages

I didn't receive much help over in the Laptop Issues forum, so I figured I'd have a go posting here instead.

I've been trying to install Arch on an HP EliteBook 8540p laptop I have just purchased, and it seems as if, after the first reboot, the machine will kernel panic when trying to install any package, such as mesa or git. I have not seen this panic happen with any command so far other than pacman. An image of the panic in question is below.

As this seems to be somewhat of an obscure problem, searching on the internet did not work. I have already tried blacklisting the serio module (the last one mentioned in the list of loaded modules) but all that did was cause my keyboard to stop working, so I re-enabled it.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Try blacklist brcmsmac module.

That seems to disable my Wi-Fi card, leaving me unable to test.

One other thing to note - installation of packages worked fine when booted off of the Live USB, but not the installation on the hard disk.

Re: HP EliteBook 8540p kernel panics when installing packages

OK, after a lot of trial and error, it does indeed seem there is a problem with the brcmsmac module on my machine. Attempts to switch to the proprietary broadcom-wl driver have also failed, as even the USB now starts panicking after authenticating to my wireless network (since updating to the 2020-09-01 install image). This does seem like a bug of sorts, however I don't know if this problem is specific to my machine or not, so I don't feel comfortable officially reporting it just yet. Meanwhile, I will try downloading the new driver over an ethernet connection.
