smb connectivity in different programs (inconsistent)

Connecting to an smb server is simple and I can open files from it and save them there.
HOWEVER! When using Thunderbird and I need to save a file to a share I can choose "Save As" and choose the share, it works. But if I open the file in LibreOffice and then choose to try to save it in the shared folder I get: "The folder contents could not be displayed. Operation not supported."
If I want to drag and drop a file form the shared folder to Thunderbird, it will not add it. I can of course use the dialog to attach the file and that will work.
What do I need to do to get these inconsistencies working properly.
Thanks!

Please edit your post and use a more meaningful title.

On topic: "Connecting to an smb server" *how*?
cifs or using thunderbirds built-in smb protocol implementation?
