xcompmgr and openbox

I am trying to get xcompmgr to work with my OpenBox3 setup but it doesn't work well at all.  I run xcompmgr -cf and I lose my background and when I click to get the OpenBox3 menu, it comes up, but unsuccessfully fades away.  It just stays there, slightly faded.  Also I get this error in the console:

error 176 request 154 minor 8 serial 24640

with a varying end number.  And that message rolls by non stop if it is running.

Its half nvidia-xconfig and half manual.  I have no idea why it isn't working.  I am using the nvidia-beta drivers.

Any help is appreciated.
