I've got a chromecast supported tv, which works perfectly fine from Chrome (Youtube for example) and mobile device, as well as Popcorn Time.
I've got problems when trying to use other software to cast media on my computer, for example mkchromecast, gnomecast, VLC.
I have installed libmicrodns and protobuf, avahi and nss-mdns, added mdns4 to nsswitch.conf so it looks like this:
hosts: files mymachines myhostname resolve dns mdns4There are no changes here, yet VLC for example still cannot find the TV under renderer, despite the same machine being able to cast via chrome.
What can I do to fix this?

Maybe there is something in the logs or program messages: look if vlc is displaying something in it's log (in Tools > Messages menu), start vlc (or other application) from terminal and see if it throw an error or any related message, maybe there is something in journalctl log (journalctl -b) or xorg log if you use X server (in your home dir: .local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log or /var/log/Xorg.0.log).
Search wherever you can.

I've checked the Messages menu, nothing is printed there, unless I stop avahi first, then it prints:
avahi renderer discovery error: failed to create avahi client: Daemon not running
main renderer discovery error: no suitable renderer discovery module for 'avahi_renderer'journalctl reports pretty much the same. The only thing visible there if avahi is running is that I can run it without an interface via cvlc.
there's no such file as .local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log, but /var/log/Xorg.0.log doesn't have any logs even remotely related to that, only display/mouse/keyboard etc.

can you be more specific? I already have avahi set up and enabled, and it didn't work with VLC
