Lenovo T14 + external 4k monitor @60Hz via USB-C dock

Hi,

I'm having trouble with getting 4k resolution at 60Hz with an external monitor connected to my Lenovo T14 (AMD) via a USB-C Dock (Lenovo Type C Dock Gen 2).

The dock allows for HDMI and DisplayPort connections, both have troubles (meaning 60Hz does not work in contrast to 30 Hz at 4k resolution)

The Laptop can be connected directly via HDMI which works perfectly, also at 60Hz.

Here are some logs

Re: Lenovo T14 + external 4k monitor @60Hz via USB-C dock

I tried updating BIOS and firmware of the Dock with no success. I had to install Windows in order to do that upgrade and indeed, on Windows I can have 60Hz, so this could be a driver issue I suppose.

Where, if not here, would be a good place to ask for further help?

Re: Lenovo T14 + external 4k monitor @60Hz via USB-C dock

Years ago I had to replace laptop power source (psu) to be able to use external monitor with higher resolution. I'm still in that belief, that raising resolution draws more power from psu. I suppose the dock you use uses same power source as laptop (my dock surely does), same psu delivering power for both. One possibility is that if dock is power hungry enough, problem might be underpowered psu.

To be honest, probably another solution, something software related, suits better in your case.

Perhaps better place for you problem is under Laptop Issues.

Did you manage to fix @60Hz issue? I have exactly the same configuration and only managed to run an external monitor at 30Hz sad

Re: Lenovo T14 + external 4k monitor @60Hz via USB-C dock

Hi!

I have the very same issue on HP Probook 435 G7 (Ryzen 4700U) on USB-C dock - this might be either amdgpu or USB controller related I guess, I can also confirm that 60Hz works on Windows. I have tried it on several kernels (5.9 and 5.10 flavors), changed cables, etc with no luck.

Hi I'm having exactly the same issue. Windows is OKay but linux is stuck at 30hz. Have you solved your problem? Is it possible that it's a driver problem?

Re: Lenovo T14 + external 4k monitor @60Hz via USB-C dock

Does windows tell you anything about the modeline?
Interlaced might work:

cvt12 3840 2160 60 -i
# 3840x2160 @ 60.000 Hz Interlaced (CVT) field rate 59.979 Hz; hsync: 67.207 kHz; pclk: 346.25 MHz
Modeline "3840x2160_60.00i" 346.25 3840 4088 4496 5152 2160 2163 2168 2200 Interlace -hsync +vsync
# or
cvt12 3840 2160 60 -b -i
# 3840x2160 @ 60.000 Hz Interlaced Reduced Blank (CVT) field rate 60.000 Hz; hsync: 66.690 kHz; pclk: 261.42 MHz
Modeline "3840x2160_60.00i_rb2" 261.42 3840 3848 3880 3920 2160 2177 2185 2191 Interlace +hsync -vsync

Can you hint me a little on how to test this?

I'm having the same issue as reported in the thread. Direct HDMI connection works in 4k@60hz. Going via the USB-C dock (HDMI and DisplayPort) only allows 4k@30hz.

regards

Re: Lenovo T14 + external 4k monitor @60Hz via USB-C dock

I finally found a workaround, thanks for all suggestions!

My ideal modeline is

➜ ~ cvt 3840 2160 60
# 3840x2160 59.98 Hz (CVT 8.29M9) hsync: 134.18 kHz; pclk: 712.75 MHz
Modeline "3840x2160_60.00" 712.75 3840 4160 4576 5312 2160 2163 2168 2237 -hsync +vsync

but it doesn't work. The following two don't work for me, either

➜ ~ cvt 3840 2160 50
# 3840x2160 49.97 Hz (CVT 8.29M9) hsync: 111.17 kHz; pclk: 587.00 MHz
Modeline "3840x2160_50.00" 587.00 3840 4144 4560 5280 2160 2163 2168 2225 -hsync +vsync
➜ ~ cvt -r 3840 2160 60
# 3840x2160 59.97 Hz (CVT 8.29M9-R) hsync: 133.25 kHz; pclk: 533.00 MHz
Modeline "3840x2160R" 533.00 3840 3888 3920 4000 2160 2163 2168 2222 +hsync -vsyn

The best setting I can find is

➜ ~ cvt12 3840 2160 50 -b
# 3840x2160 @ 50.000 Hz Reduced Blank (CVT) field rate 50.000 Hz; hsync: 110.550 kHz; pclk: 433.36 MHz
Modeline "3840x2160_50.00_rb2" 433.36 3840 3848 3880 3920 2160 2197 2205 2211 +hsync -vsync

I wrote a script for this

xrandr --newmode nm 433.36 3840 3848 3880 3920 2160 2197 2205 2211 +hsync -vsync
xrandr --addmode $ACTIVE nm
xrandr --output $ACTIVE --mode nm

where $ACTIVE is the current monitor I'm using.
