As the title says I can't boot the system without appending nomodeset to my boot options. using nvidia-drm.modeset=0 or nvidia.modeset=0 does not work, only nomodeset.

From what I can tell systemd says that it actually hits tty1 and is waiting for a login. From my end I get a black screen after the normal messages of loading linux-zen and loading /dev/sda2, etc...

There's a bugzilla post about the i2c issue being related to linux looking for usb support on nvidia graphics cards, but I've tried booting with both a newer gtx 1660 and the original gtx 660 the system came with. Additionally this is a fresh install of Arch but I was already running Arch on this hardware for a month with no issues.

Looks like a hardware problem with memory .
I suggest you boot archlinux installation iso and run memtest86+ .
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Ran memtest86+. The first time there were multiple errors reported. Weird as the ram is brand new. I reseated the ram and ran memtest86+ again, this time every test passed. However.....
Those *BAD*gran size lines still show up in journalctl. Here is the most recent boot.

One line that is standing out to me shows that systemd loads the i915 DRM.

Is it possible that systemd is loading the Intel DRM module NOT the Nvidia DRM? My understanding is that the i915 module interferes with the Nvidia module. I thought I had actually blacklisted the i915 module though I suppose not? The method I used was to create a file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist and wrote the one line "blacklist i915" inside.

My method for blacklisting was slightly off... I renamed my blacklist file blacklist.conf, added it to the files section of my mkinitcpio.conf and then regenerated the initramfs using mkinitcpio -P.
This change has made it so that the computer now boots all the way to the tty login prompt and then the screen goes black. Adding nouveau to the blacklist file made it so that my prompt stays up for a full second or two before the screen goes black.

Installed linux-zen-headers so now it seems like even if I boot with nomodeset my X session uses the Nvidia drivers. The system still will not boot to a tty login prompt without nomodeset though.

Not using lts so I haven't tried.
I'm not sure I communicated this clearly before so I will restate. This is the second install of Arch linux, specifically linux-zen, on the same hardware. The prior install didn't require nomodeset or any other extraneous configuration.

You can have multiple kernels installed at once and select at boot which one to use.
Is the issue limited to linux-zen or can you reproduce it on linux or linux-lts?

I am not suggesting you change you kernel preference, the check is for diagnostic use.

You are booting with non-uefi using VESA frame buffer. Unless you have a specific reason for using non-uefi, a efi frame buffer however support a high resolution tty. how about re-partition and booting with uefi and turnoff CSM on bios.

You are booting with non-uefi using VESA frame buffer. Unless you have a specific reason for using non-uefi, a efi frame buffer however support a high resolution tty. how about re-partition and booting with uefi and turnoff CSM on bios.
Yes that is by intention. The hardware all used to live in it's original case, an Alienware x51 r1, up until a week ago. The prior installation had an efi partition and booted using uefi. After switching all the parts to a new case the bios no longer recognized my Arch install and instead would present me with a screen claiming there were no os's detected and that I needed to install Windows 8. At that point I could boot the Arch ISO on a usb stick and could arch-chroot into my prior install; everything was right where I left it configured exactly the same the bios just for some reason refused to register that it was there. On the prior install I actually even reformatted the efi partition to mbr and confirmed at that point that using legacy mode the bios could load grub. I was getting the black screen at that point too and didn't realize yet that nomodeset is a thing, hence the motivation to reinstall Arch outright.
I am going to switch my post over to solved at this point though. Currently booting with nomodeset gets me my tty login prompt, and after logging in I can start X and it runs the Nvidia drivers properly so the system is functional as far as I'm concerned.
