ThinkPad T480 has SD card reader bound to /dev/sda

I'm having the exact same problem as this guy:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=242358

For some reason, the sd card reader binds to /dev/sda, and it doesn't seem to properly handle hot swapping all the time.
It often does not detect that my card was ejected, and that once lead to a corruption of the exfat partition header on one of my cards.
If I change sd cards, sometimes dmesg outputs a message like "sda changed size from size A to size B" corresponding to the new card I used.
