random hanging/freezing

I am getting seemingly random, hard crashes.
Everything freezes and goes unresponsive, sound stops, keyboard LEDs can no longer be toggled, as if the kernel has crashed.

some information:
uname -a: Linux net44.home 5.8.14-arch1-1 #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed, 07 Oct 2020 23:59:46 +0000 x86_64 GNU/Linux
cpu: ivy bridge cpu, intel_ucode installed and loaded
gpu: gtx 1070. using nvidia propietary driver

I haven't installed anything in a few days now, but I have upgrading my system regardless (pacman -Syuu)

here is output from sudo journalctl -b-1 ...

Oct 13 01:45:41 net44.home kernel: CR2: 0000000000000020 CR3: 00000007c4de2002 CR4: 00000000001606e0
Oct 13 01:45:41 net44.home kernel: BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000027
Oct 13 01:45:41 net44.home kernel: #PF: supervisor read access in kernel mode
Oct 13 01:45:41 net44.home kernel: #PF: error_code(0x0000) - not-present page

and ...

Fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed!

I will post a full log file. I think the relevant errors are line 1655 - 1744, but you would know better than me.

Also.. when I open htop, I see core 3 at 100% briefly but then it goes back down to 0.
But then I close htop, and open it again 5 minutes later and it is back at 100%, but goes back down to 0 before i can see whats using it. I am not sure if it's relevant, but it happens when I am not running anything. Just thought i'd mention it

Re: random hanging/freezing

There seems to be a bug in the current versions of the prop drivers, that occasionally pops up https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/b … /155506/17

There doesn't seem to be a solid reproducer but afaik it started with the 450 series of drivers and is not present in 440.100 so going with nvidia-440xx might be a good option.

Re: random hanging/freezing

I see. Maybe I will list what I was doing at the time for google to find, incase people research occurences of the bug.

I was running chromium, had two tabs using the gpu (electron apps steam and discord), had about 12 other tabs for github, various blogs

Behind chrome I was running windowmaker, wmcalclock, wmsystemtray, nedit and I had just entered my password to install a package (it never went through)

I wasn;t running any games, I had just started x recently and was getting to work.

Maybe this info will help lead to it being reproduced one day..

By the way, is it safe to downgrade? Will those old drivers work with the latest kernel, wine, vulkan and the likes?
Will having such old drivers cause issues when I do system upgrades?

Also, according to that post people could still access their machines via ssh.

I was not able to do that.

Re: random hanging/freezing

Well yes that's the problem, it can and can't happen and it seems to be quite random when and how, and these kind of issues can be an absolute pain to identify.

They are not that old, like beginning/middle of this year. Yes they still work fine with everything, not sure what will happen with the 5.9 kernel but technically if absolutely necessary it's often possible to patch in support but I'd hope we'd see a fix by then.

Re: random hanging/freezing

Knowing nvidia I would not count on seeing a fix anytime soon.

Re: random hanging/freezing

I am going to be switching to an r9 290x, Im just glad an nvidia driver bug was all it was. Most of the threads with a similar issue that I found when googling never saw a solution

Re: random hanging/freezing

It's almost impossible for this to be still the same issue, please open your own thread with logs from your own system to make proper assessments.

Closing this old issue.
