pavucontrol Establishing connection to PulseAudio. Please wait...

Hi,

I've been using Arch for a few years now, but never quite understood sound configuration.

A few months ago I noticed my sound control shortcuts (I guess it was pamixer or something) wasn't working anymore. As the title says, pavucontrol is stuck on Establishing connection to PulseAudio. Pleas wait....

I gave up and switched to amixer. But today, it isn't working either. I can't listen to anything. I saw a few commands on other topics that might be useful here.

This is when I try to run pulseaudio, but it seems to be already running.

$ pulseaudio
E: [pulseaudio] pid.c: Daemon already running.
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed.

Trying with alsamixer and amixer turns out to not find a file or directory.

$ alsamixer
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory

$ amixer
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such file or directory

$ amixer -c 1
Invalid card number.

$ alsamixer -c 1
invalid card index: 1

lspci gives a couple of audio devices.
$ lspci | grep -i audio
17:00:1f.3 Audio device: Intel Corporation Cannon Lake PCH cAVS (rev 10)
21:01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation GP107GL High Definition Audio Controller (rev a1)

$ lspci | \grep -i audio
00:1f.3 Audio device: Intel Corporation Cannon Lake PCH cAVS (rev 10)
01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation GP107GL High Definition Audio Controller (rev a1)

aplay doesn't find soundcards, even though /proc/asound/modules reports two lines. I'm not sure how (or even if) they are related though.

$ aplay -l
aplay: device_list:274: no soundcards found...

$ cat /proc/asound/modules
 0 snd_hda_intel
 1 snd_hda_intel

I found this command on another thread, hope it is useful somehow.

$ dmesg | grep -E 'snd|hda|ALSA'

Now, I don't actually grasp the difference between PulseAudio and Alsa. Any tips to where I should head and read is appreciated.

Thanks in advance smile

Re: pavucontrol Establishing connection to PulseAudio. Please wait...

How are you logging in and starting your session? Post the outputs of

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
loginctl show-session $XDG_SESSION_ID
strace aplay -l #Install strace, potentially a lot of output

Re: pavucontrol Establishing connection to PulseAudio. Please wait...

My laptop starts with a black screen (I guess they are called tty), I type my credentials and use startx to initiate the graphics part (windows management?).

The command fuser doesn't output anything and it returns a code different from zero.

$ sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*

The output for loginctl is the following.

$ loginctl show-session $XDG_SESSION_ID

Re: pavucontrol Establishing connection to PulseAudio. Please wait...

How does your .xinitrc look like? You lack permissions to access the audio devices which is usually a pointer to broken session setup. Read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xinit#xinitrc and the followup section for .xserverrc so that you properly setup the necessary definitions that should load the session permissions properly.

Re: pavucontrol Establishing connection to PulseAudio. Please wait...

I'm not really sure which permissions to give, nor which audio devices to give permission to, on the session setup. I read the wiki on xinitrc but did not find anything related to giving permission. I then read again the wiki on PulseAudio. I remember tweaking a few files from that page.

Here it is my .xinitrc

$ cat .xinitrc
xrandr &&

numlockx &

xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
xrandr --auto
#xrandr --dpi 96

systemctl --user import-environment DISPLAY

sxhkd &

xset r rate 250 30

xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources &&

xsetroot -cursor_name left_ptr

xinput set-button-map "UNIW0001:00 093A:0003 Touchpad" 1 2 3 5 4 6 7 8 9 10 11 12

bluetoothctl power on

exec bspwm

Some of the files on /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc does not exist, so I just deleted those lines. The only line was regarding .Xresources. I skipped the part where it defines the Nord theme colors.

$ cat .Xresources

I just noticed that when I booted this morning, my amixer command was working again. I can use it to control the volume and I can listen to stuff now. But pavucontrol is still stuck sad
