Issues persistent across different distros (currently on arch 5.9)

I've been having this issue for a while where I will be able to install arch (and other distros) just fine, get the de and stuff running, but no matter what I seem to do, after a certain amount of time (15 mins - 1 hr) my audio devices will just vanish from the volume settings and if i try to play a video or something, it'll just get stuck buffering indefinitely, and on the off chance it does play, there's no sound. I haven't tried games because frankly I don't want this to happen while I'm doing anything besides browsing on youtube. I've been lead to believe that it's one of my usb devices, but at the same time I've used this in the past on another system and even on THIS system and it's worked just fine, I haven't noticed this kind of issue up until kernel 5.8.

Hi. smile Your post is missing a lot of information. What hardware are you using? What sound card are you using? What sections of the Arch Linux installation guide did you follow? For example, did you setup power saving?

If you are convinced it might be a kernel issue, you can try replacing the "linux" package with the older "linux-lts" package. Does that resolve the issue?

Re: Issues persistent across different distros (currently on arch 5.9)

Hi, sorry, I'm really not used to forums.

I'm running:
Ryzen 7 3800X
Asus ROG Crosshair VII Hero (Wi-Fi) with its on board audio (though my main audio sources are usb, though there's a jack on my monitor that i'm using)
Zotac Gaming RTX 2080 super
Corsair Vengance RGB 32GB (2x16GB) 3200MHz
Corsair RX800 psu
Corsair K95 rgb platinum keyboard (which i have had issues with in linux before)
Asus ROG Chakram mouse
Steelseries arctis 5 wired usb headphones
Aorus CV27Q-SA Monitor
Huion Kamvas pro 20 (2019) don't know if this could be an issue, as it uses usb and requires a driver not really present on linux

As for the guide, I basically followed the installation instructions and a few driver related threads for amd cpu and nvidia, to be clear, i've done this before and it's worked just fine, but coming back to it now has lead to these strange issues, and it's only ever been since kernel 5.8, maybe lts would be worth a shot.

When they "vanish" what's your output for

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
aplay -l
pacmd list-cards
pacmd list-sinks
dmesg

? Which of these devices are you actively using for output, do they all disappear? Post this output in
code
Re: Issues persistent across different distros (currently on arch 5.9)

So, I'm just finding out now that it may have been an issue with the nvidia driver. I'm only finding this out now as I'm recently finding out that the nvidia driver isn't supported for kernel 5.9 as of October. When I was mainly having these issues I was in kernel 5.8 and below.

Depends, if you aren't actually using HDMI audio, unlikely, and even then, it does actually support most normal desktop usecases properly, certainly not much that is inherently related to your problem based on your symptom description.

Re: Issues persistent across different distros (currently on arch 5.9)

Wait, I just realized something, the audio on my monitor is passed through displayport and on windows, it's usually picked up as nvidia audio, could that be something to do with it? Because when the monitor turns off, the audio source goes with it and comes back, always prompting my discord or other software to switch audio. Maybe the suspension of my monitor causes a glitch in the audio driver?

Afaiu your audio devices are usb ones? (Headphones, external DSP, …)

When DPMS kicks in your monitor might take that as an opprtunity to turn off (deregistering the output) and will not be available as audio device either.

And please post the output requested in #5 so we get an idea about the actual system setup.
