gtk fonts are ugly and pixelated

I am using i3wm.

I use lxappearance to manage gtk settings and qt5ct to manage qt apps.

My gtk applications have hideous font rendering, notable chromium. While my qt apps such as calibre have georgeous font rendering.

This is my .gtkrc-2.0

I have gone over fonts in the ArchWiki but I seem to be missing something.
