Missing lineart mode in Xsane with Canon LIDE 210 scanner

In Xsane, I can no longer use the Lineart mode with my Canon LIDE 210 scanner. The only options are now "Color" and "Gray". I tried to downgrade Xsane or to get rid of the ~/.sane directory, but apparently there is in issue with the Sane library itself: when I use the scanimage command with the "--mode Lineart" option, I get an error (scanimage: setting of option --mode failed (Invalid argument)). I tried to downgrade the sane package, but there are dependency issues with libusbx.

Re: Missing lineart mode in Xsane with Canon LIDE 210 scanner

I see in release notes and this merge request that lineart support was removed. The merge request says that it used to be supported "within the backend" and it should "live in a higher level and be reusable by all backends". It looks like, though, that this "higher level" mode does not exist and there currently is no way to scan in lineart mode. I asked in #sane on Freenode if there was some kind of workaround but unfortunately I could not get an answer.
