I'm using I3. When I disable the gdm service, then use startx to boot up I3, my GNOME applications take more than 10 seconds to open up while they take less than a second normally. These applications are not slow or anything, but I'm just wondering why there's such a huge delay at their startup process. Some of the GNOME apps are great so this is preventing me from permanently disabling the GNOME display manager, which is something I want to do.
Enabling the GDM service after booting up with startx fixes the issue, but it means that I have to disable the service every time I want to turn off the PC.
Any help is appreciated. I'm using an XPS 15 with a nvidia GPU.

How do you start i3 when not using gdm ? Post your .xinitrc or better yet because I'm fairly certain it's incomplete read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xinit#xinitrc paying special attention to the blue note boxes.

Yep, you were right. I forgot to source the scripts from /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc in my ~/.xinitrc file. Thanks for the help buddy.
