Poor performance/Low Framerate With Native Games/Steam Runtime.

Having a strange issue with only Linux native/Steam Runtime games. Wine/Proton games seem to run just fine. So far I have been able to reproduce on every Linux native game I have. Here is some system info.

Searched the forums but couldn't seem to find anyone else with the same issue. Hoping someone else has seen this before. Thanks in advance.

Re: Poor performance/Low Framerate With Native Games/Steam Runtime.

What strange issue(s) do you have with (what) game(s)? Can you write more about it?

It looks like you don't have nvidia binary drivers installed or enabled. With that GPU on nouveau driver you can have poor performance because of low core and memory default frequencies that this driver can't make it higher because of nvidia GPU encrypted firmware since Geforce 900 series and up.

Re: Poor performance/Low Framerate With Native Games/Steam Runtime.

OpenGL renderer string: llvmpipe (LLVM 11.0.0, 256 bits)

llvmpipe is software rendering that's only used when no HW rendering is possible.

kshelton, this looks like programs under steam & wine use your nvidia card directly, but something in your X setup is very wrong.
Please post lspic -k, xorg log , and the contents of *.conf files in /etc/X11 and /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d folders

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: Poor performance/Low Framerate With Native Games/Steam Runtime.

I have a similar issue. It's really independent of the game, e.g., Rimworld. As long as it uses OpenGL I get low FPS (~1-5 FPS in the menu). If I restart the Xorg server (kill my WM), I get the expected FPS in OpenGL games. So, yeah I assume my Xorg config is messed up too, but I have no clue where. I used nvidia-settings to generate it since I don't know enough about Xorg to mess around with. Any attempt from my side (on other occasions) made things worse.

I get the following outputs:

xorg.conf files generated by nvidia-settings are very often the CAUSE of problems .

I suggest you move or rename that file, then restart X .
It's hard to determine if you have the same issue as OP, better be safe and create a new thread.

post fresh xorg log and the MODULES= line from /etc/mkinitcpio.conf .
Also dmesg (run as root) output.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: Poor performance/Low Framerate With Native Games/Steam Runtime.

Take a look at this topic:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=264306

It´s solved my problem, which was quite similar as yours.

Re: Poor performance/Low Framerate With Native Games/Steam Runtime.

It's so great if there is not only one solution but two which both combined make perfect sense, at least in my head...

So let me explain what I did and combine that with the topic Yarw pointed out:

First, I tried to set up Xorg by myself, but it seems its level is higher than the number of badges I have since it totally ignored my orders... So, I moved away from that idea and decided to take what doesn't work and start to delete chunks in my config I suspected to be the culprit. Well, it points out I'm more of a noob regarding Xorg than I would like to admit since I deleted almost everything in my config until I could pinpoint the culprit. It was the following line in the Device section:

Driver "nvidia"

Well, that was unexpected. Reloading my backup and removing that single line fixed the issue. V1del pointed out that the OpenGL acceleration is misconfigured. After adding those lines and not removing the driver definition, it works equally well.

So it seems the Nvidia driver misses to load some OpenGL configs until explicitly told? At least when defined in the Xorg file? As I said, removing the driver definition leads to the same results. I assume then it fell back to default settings.

I try to understand what happened here. After removing the Files Section, the issue persisted. So shouldn't it load the defaults then as well? Maybe somebody more experienced could give a short explanation? smile
