Give user permissions in existing home directory (not shared dir)

I created a new user and changed his directory with this

usermod -d /newhome/username username

But problem is, the user has no permissions in that directory, how can i fix that? Note: i don't want the directory shared, as i after i successfully give the new user permissions in it i will delete the old user.
