When trying to access root ("/" - hda9) partition from konqueror's media:/ folder, it gives
Permission Denied. All other partitions are accessible (/home - hda10, /boot - hda 8). Also hda9 icon shows that it is unmounted, but according to mtab it is mounted:
/dev/hda9 / ext3 rw 0 0
piece of /etc/fstab:
/dev/hda9 / ext3 defaults 0 1
/dev/hda10 /home ext3 defaults 0 1
/dev/hda8 /boot ext2 defaults 0 1
Only hda9 (root partition) gives this error. Also cdrom and dvdrom devices are invisble under media:/. They shows after putting cd. After putting cd inside my DVD, this cdrom shows as unmounted cd recorder (instead of dvd).
How to make cdrom and dvd show in media:/ ? And how to access root partition from media:/ ?

I am refreshing this subject,, because now kde 3.5.5 is in current and problem still exists. Root partition shows up in media:/ as unmounted partition and when I try accessing it, error shows: Permission denied.

I'm am still on KDE 3.5.4 but had this symptoms too.
Downgradin' 'hal' to
Version : 0.5.7-2 solved my problems.
All the followin' versions are not working properly for me.

I filed a bug for this yesterday:
http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/5673
I think they refer to this one when they say it's a duplicate (although it's unclear to me because the base symptoms are not the same):

Adding the missing /dev/root symlink solves this problem, and the problem I had that I couldn't even mount normal USB flash driver via HAL

Now I can't access neither root partition nor flopppy via media:/ protocol in KDE. I can manage that, but for my girlfrind (and for many users, I think) it's a quite big problem. It's not solved for a long time. Can developers repair that?

Hopefully this bug gets fixed soon. This is affecting gnome/kde/etc. Like someone else said, they can manage but other users might not be as advanced and cannot. Hopefully fixed soon.
