Gnome Screenshot fails to select screen area

I am trying to use gnome-screenshot on gnome but it fails to grab a selected area of the screen. When I call the screenshot with area selection, the mouse pointer changes to a cross but when I try to make the selection area dragging it across the screen, the selection area does not expand even one pixel. The  mouse pointer simply returns to its original form.  This happens through all ways: using the GUI, the keyboard shortcut and the terminal command (gnome-screenshot -a).  No error is reported when running through terminal.

I tried installing gscreenshot and got the error:

Failed to call region selector -- Using fallback region selection
