[solved] soundcards not found on Lenovo 81X3

From aplay --list-devices:

 aplay: device_list:274: no soundcards found... 

(kernel version 5.9.11-arch2-1; same with previous kernels for two months)

I have found  posts about sound working on a Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5, which this is, but they also said "Ryzen" and seemed to be AMD.  This uses intel core i7, 10th gen and advertizes "front facing speakers".

How do I check reliably?

dmesg | grep -E 'snd|sof'

On an educated guess, install sof-firmware and alsa-ucm-conf https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … A_Firmware

thanks, I had never heard of sof; still no sound, but dmesg and aplay -l show stuff.  I will figure it out from here I think.
