[SOLVED] Some applications hang for a few seconds fairly frequently

This is the system information of my system:

Operating System: Arch Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 5.20.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.76.0
Qt Version: 5.15.2
Kernel Version: 5.9.11-arch2-1
OS Type: 64-bit
Processors: 24 × AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12-Core Processor
Memory: 31.3 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: GeForce GTX 1650/PCIe/SSE2

For the last couple of days I've noticed that some applications (Vim running in Konsole, GVim, Telegram Desktop...) hang for a few seconds every minute or so as I'm typing. I notice that happen when I type, since nothing appears on the screen until suddenly everything appears at once. Some applications will allow me to move their screen around as that happens (GVim, for example), although they won't adapt their GUI to the new window size until they thaw; others (Telegram Desktop) are completely unresponsive and their windows will not move at all until they thaw.

I have noticed some changes in graphics through my session as well. When the session starts, Synapse looks something like this:
Screen-Shot-2016-10-18-at-19.51.01.png

However, at some point it starts looking like this:
Screenshot-20201205-201707.png

Opening new windows take a while, and for a few seconds the new windows simply show the contents of whichever application is behind them.

I have noticed this warning in the Compositor option inside System Settings:
"OpenGL compositing (the default) has crashed KWin in the past. This was most likely due to a driver bug. If you think that you have meanwhile upgraded to a stable driver, you can reset this protection but be aware that this might result in an immediate crash! Alternatively, you might want to use the XRender backend instead."

The system is barely usable at the moment: apps take a lot to load, they hang very often and it's common that they are "unresponsive" when trying to close them.

In case it's useful, this is the output of lspci -v:

Re: [SOLVED] Some applications hang for a few seconds fairly frequently

Press the button to reenable compositing. This has a general chance to break on driver/qt updates because the shader compilation might take long enough for KWin to surmise something is broken while there really isn't.

Maybe also post

glxinfo -B #Needs mesa-demos

Thank you for your reply. I had actually clicked it at some point earlier today; just clicked it but I'm still seeing hangs (may I need to restart the system?).

Re: [SOLVED] Some applications hang for a few seconds fairly frequently

I have rebooted the system. For a few minutes the compositor was not disabled again, but the hangs were happening (Telegram, Firefox...). Synapse was shown fine (which I assume is a sign of the compositor not having given up) but maximizing the browser window took a few seconds, and launching Spectacle resulted in the Spectacle window displaying whatever was behind it when it was launched for some good 10 seconds, as before...

OpenGL compositing was disabled as Firefox hanged, and the system is back at the state of my original post after some ten minutes of uptime.

Do you see any messages in your journal when this happens?

Sorry, just saw this. I didn't have the chance to check. A new nvidia driver was released the next day; once I could do a full update the day after that (I had to wait for the new kernel version to be supported by archzfs) it was all fixed. I re-enabled OpenGL compositing and it hasn't been disabled ever since, and no more hangs smile
