[SOLVED] Lenovo B50-70 Intel/AMD hardware acceleration won't work

Hey everyone! This is my first post on this forum and I apologize for possibly vague wording.

The system:
Laptop - Lenovo B50-70
CPU: Intel Pentium 3558U (2) @ 1.700Ghz
GPU: AMD ATI Radeon HD 8550M / R5 M230
GPU: Intel Haswell-ULT - according to libva/libGL errors, i965

The problem:
Hardware acceleration either freezes the system entirely or crashes the program that is using it (same result for VLC, Steam, Google Chrome with acceleration on, glmark2). Running them without HW-acceleration seems to work, yet Steam's interface shows nothing in that case. My work also implies using Google Chrome all the time with video and audio broadcast, so having the acceleration would probably make it easier for my CPU to handle hours of such load.
Also

xrandr --listproviders

lists only Intel GPU, even though there are no GPU-related config files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/

Things I tried:

  • Installing either of open-source AMD drivers - xf86-video-ati, at least, allows me to detect the AMD GPU in xrandr.

  • Installing both VA-API and VDPAU for my Intel GPU and AMD GPUs.

  • Using the laptop with intel.conf as follows:

    Section "Device"
    	Identifier "Intel"
    	Driver "intel"
    	Option "TearFree" "on"
            Option "NoAccel" "true"
    EndSection

    However, that is not ideal for the work I am doing on this laptop and I'm looking for a way

EDIT - THE SOLUTION THAT WORKED:
Switching to LTS kernel, setting modprobe for AMD GPU and removing the redundant drivers seemed to do the trick.

Re: [SOLVED] Lenovo B50-70 Intel/AMD hardware acceleration won't work

0a:00.0 Display controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Sun LE [Radeon HD 8550M / R5 M230]
	Subsystem: Lenovo Device 3815
	Kernel modules: radeon, amdgpu

Normally that should show a 'kernel driver in use' , maybe the modules are blacklisted[1].

Check /etc/modprobe.d/ and /usr/lib/modprobe.d/ folders.
If that doesn't help, post

# journalctl -b | grep -v audit

(run as root)

[1] https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … acklisting

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

(A works at time B)  && (time C > time B ) ≠  (A works at time C)

Thanks for the reply!

Both folders are empty. Forgot to mention: no radeon/amdgpu modules or devices are blacklisted, and early KMS is also enabled.

Here's grub.cfg if it provides anything useful as well:

And if it is of any help, mkinitcpio.conf:

# vim:set ft=sh
# MODULES
# The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
# run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
# in this array. For instance:
#     MODULES=(piix ide_disk reiserfs)
MODULES=(radeon amdgpu i915)

# BINARIES
# This setting includes any additional binaries a given user may
# wish into the CPIO image. This is run last, so it may be used to
# override the actual binaries included by a given hook
# BINARIES are dependency parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
BINARIES=()

# FILES
# This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added
# as-is and are not parsed in any way. This is useful for config files.
FILES=()

# HOOKS
# This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
# modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
# Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the
# order in which HOOKS are added. Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook name>' for
# help on a given hook.
# 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.
# 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules
# 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES
# Examples:
## This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.
## No raid, lvm2, or encrypted root is needed.
#    HOOKS=(base)
#
## This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should
## work as a sane default
# HOOKS=(base udev autodetect block filesystems)
#
## This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
##   No autodetection is done.
#    HOOKS=(base udev block filesystems)
#
## This setup assembles a pata mdadm array with an encrypted root FS.
## Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H mdadm' for more information on raid devices.
# HOOKS=(base udev block mdadm encrypt filesystems)
#
## This setup loads an lvm2 volume group on a usb device.
#    HOOKS=(base udev block lvm2 filesystems)
#
## NOTE: If you have /usr on a separate partition, you MUST include the
# usr, fsck and shutdown hooks.

Re: [SOLVED] Lenovo B50-70 Intel/AMD hardware acceleration won't work

The journal output appears to be from user, not root . The core dumps it shows do confirm you have graphics related problems though.

Your kernel parameters indicate you want to use amdgpu but the loading of radeon before amdgpu in initramfs probably blocks that.
Try removing radeon from the modules= line in mkinitcpio.conf ,
regenerate initrams. with mkinitcpio -p linux and reboot .

xrandr now lists both of the GPUs - the radeon one is listed as HAINAN. The VLC player still crashes with this:

Re: [SOLVED] Lenovo B50-70 Intel/AMD hardware acceleration won't work

We're making progress, but those errors inidcate something else is wrong with your graphics setup.

post

$ glxinfo -B

.

If that fails, try LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo -B

Re: [SOLVED] Lenovo B50-70 Intel/AMD hardware acceleration won't work

Kinda what I expected, guess you didn't notice last line of #6 ?

post

$ LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo -B

That should help to get closer to find the cause of the problems.

Re: [SOLVED] Lenovo B50-70 Intel/AMD hardware acceleration won't work

I did, but I definitely didn't recognize that as an issue before you pointed it out. I'm fairly inexperienced with Arch yet, let alone troubleshooting the hybrid graphics here. smile

I really appreciate your effort in helping me out with this! Hopefully it either has a proper fix or at least stays on this forum and has a chance to help someone else.

It seems your installation is missing several necessary parts or something is really screwed up.

Post the outputs of

and also xorg log ( check ~/.local/share/xorg/ folder)

I wonder what I managed to screw up already, if I am really to blame.

If that may provide any helpful information, I am using i3-gaps and xcompmgr.

Note the versions numbers : some are 20.3.0 , others are 21.0.0 .

You're mixing parts from Lordheavy unofficial mesagit repo with extra/mesa parts .
All mesa components need to be of the same version (and use the same llvm/clang version) , you can't mix them .

Looking at https://gitlab.com/lordheavy/mesa-git/- … t/PKGBUILD & https://gitlab.com/lordheavy/mesa-git/- … t/PKGBUILD I'd say it's not your screwup though.

vulkan-mesa-layers-git / vulkan-intel-git / vulkan-radeon-git should depend on mesa-git but don't.
(It's very easy to miss something like that with spilt packages and one of the reasons my aur mesa-git packages are not split) .

Lordheavy needs to be informed of this and in my opinion bug reports should be made by people encountering the bug.
Do you have a gitlab.com account. LP5 ?

To continue further with solving the issue you have to choose what to use :  stable mesa from extra or mesa git versions .

Re: [SOLVED] Lenovo B50-70 Intel/AMD hardware acceleration won't work

I do have a github account, not a gitlab one. Shouldn't be a problem, though?

As for mesa vs mesa-git - I don't see any particular reason to use mesa-git, so I'd rather proceed with mesa. I've tried to solve the problem myself, and apparently, a similar issue was once fixed when the user switched to mesa-git. Guess it isn't my case, or I didn't switch properly in the first place.

So, to clarify, you're suggesting that I install mesa-demos, get rid of my -git drivers and submit a bug report to Lordheavy's github with logs I have provided here? Again, I am very thankful for your help!

Re: [SOLVED] Lenovo B50-70 Intel/AMD hardware acceleration won't work

yes, remove the llvm/clang and mesa git versions , replace aur glxinfo with mesa-demos .

LordHeavy will not need all logs, I expect the glxinfo and pacman -Qs mesa output to be enough to see the issue.

The pacman -Qs xorg output indicates you have way to many drivers installed.
Most are harmless but do remove xf86-video-ati and look up all xf86-* packages to see if you need/want them.

Re: [SOLVED] Lenovo B50-70 Intel/AMD hardware acceleration won't work

I have switched to mesa (non-git) and removed xf86-video-ati. xf86-video-amdgpu still remains, and here's my current xrandr output:

Providers: number : 2
Provider 0: id: 0x48 cap: 0xb, Source Output, Sink Output, Sink Offload crtcs: 4 outputs: 5 associated providers: 0 name:Intel
Provider 1: id: 0x8a cap: 0x0 crtcs: 0 outputs: 0 associated providers: 0 name:modesetting

Some other configuration displayed Provider 1 as HAINAN, which is apparently ATI card with GCN1 architecture, something regarding South/Sea Island family. However, even that configuration didn't work with hardware acceleration.

Either way, the other problems persist with no visible difference in any previously attempted commands and programs.

Here are a few more outputs if it helps:

glxinfo -B

Re: [SOLVED] Lenovo B50-70 Intel/AMD hardware acceleration won't work

Lone Wolf, thanks to you pointing out different versions and not mixing things together, I am finally onto some progress.

Knowing my GPU and reading the wiki again, I once again made sure that it is GCN1 architecture and requires ATI drivers if I want to install them from the official repository, non-git, not AUR. I checked the AUR packages I have and saw amdgpu-pro and some 32-bit libs of the same branch that caused at least a portion of the problem.

Deleting the AUR video drivers, I managed to get a different output from glxinfo -B, which now detects my Intel card all right, yet it results into a system halt with higher CPU load (the laptop heats up really quickly, becomes completely unresponsive and attempts to cool itself down a bit with higher fan usage) - same happens with VLC, which also gives me an error of some iHD driver missing (I couldn't copy the output since the only way to get the system back responsive again was either forcefully rebooting the machine or waiting for keyboard and mouse/touchpad becoming responsive again and exiting i3wm, effectively resetting the session and xserver, I guess).

The ATI card seems to be properly detected now:

xrandr --listproviders

Providers: number : 2
Provider 0: id: 0x48 cap: 0xb, Source Output, Sink Output, Sink Offload crtcs: 4 outputs: 5 associated providers: 1 name:Intel
Provider 1: id: 0x8a cap: 0xd, Source Output, Source Offload, Sink Offload crtcs: 0 outputs: 0 associated providers: 1 name:HAINAN @ pci:0000:0a:00.0

Here is my mesa output now:

pacman -Qs mesa

Re: [SOLVED] Lenovo B50-70 Intel/AMD hardware acceleration won't work

The mesa / lib32-mesa components now appear to be all from the same version : 20.3.0 .
glu & mesa-demos have different versions.

your amd videocard with GCN1 has a few options :
kernel module radeon + xf86-video-ati
kernel module amdgpu + xf86-video-amdgpu
radeon or admgpu kernel module + X modesetting (integrated in xorg-server packages)

For the intel video card there's only one kernel module but 2 possibiliites for X :
xf86-video-intel or X modesetting .
X modesetting is best choice for recent intel gpu,  but older cards (like 4+ years old) may work better with xf86-video-intel .

For now i recommend removing every xf86-video-* except xf86-video-amdgpu .

restart X (or reboot) and check the outputs of

$ glxinfo -B
$ DRI_PRIME=1 glxinfo -B

Both output should look similar to the one I posted.

EDIT : once the basics are working as intended, we'll look at HW video acceleration.

Re: [SOLVED] Lenovo B50-70 Intel/AMD hardware acceleration won't work

Left only the amdgpu kernel module and ran mkinitpcio -p linux and removed everything except amdgpu package as you said:

$ pacman -Qs xf86-video

It does like a progress! I guess this whole time I assumed that installing all the drivers there are will inevitably solve the problem because the system will magically choose the right one for me. Thanks again, Wolf, it's the first time I feel like the problem is actually moving to a point of being solved.

Re: [SOLVED] Lenovo B50-70 Intel/AMD hardware acceleration won't work

Yep, those look good.

HW acceleration : stick with va-api and don't bother with vdpau

For the intel gpu it looks like your system is not recent enough for intel-media-driver but needs to use libva-intel-driver .
For the amd card it's simpler , you need libva-mesa-driver .

Verify that libva-intel-driver & libva-mesa-driver are installed, also check intel-media-driver and anything vdpau related are not.

post the outputs of

$ vainfo
$ DRI_PRIME=1 vainfo

Re: [SOLVED] Lenovo B50-70 Intel/AMD hardware acceleration won't work

Did as you told me to, except that I couldn't remove libvdpau - ffmpeg dependency, which itself is a dependency for Firefox, VLC itself and a number of other applications.

Not sure why (maybe for the reason above), I get the same result with both commands:

Re: [SOLVED] Lenovo B50-70 Intel/AMD hardware acceleration won't work

I forgot ffmpeg has gotten more dependencies over time .

Not entirely sure if vaapi uses dri-prime, try both

$ LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=amdgpu vainfo
$ DRI_PRIME=1 LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=amdgpu vainfo

Re: [SOLVED] Lenovo B50-70 Intel/AMD hardware acceleration won't work

[    40.378] Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/sda6

Looks like you changed the boot kernel parameters and prevented amdgpu kernel module from managing your videocard by doing that.
That means your amd card is now probably managed through the older radeon kernel module .

[ 40.657] (II) Applying OutputClass "Radeon" to /dev/dri/card1
[    40.657] 	loading driver: radeon

Those lines normally only occur when xf86-video-ati is present and that should no longer be the case.

Looks like we'll have to get back to basics :
post /etc/mkinitcpio.conf , lspci -k , pacman -Qs xf86 and (as root) journalctl -b .

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

(A works at time B)  && (time C > time B ) ≠  (A works at time C)
