Hello,
I am using a Schiit Modi 3 and pulse audio doesn't let me select SPDIF in the mixer.
However, when I ran fedora, I could select digital output, so I am probably missing something trivial (Hence Newbie Corner)
aplay -l:
card 2: S3 [Schiit Modi 3], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]
Subdevices: 0/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0Edited my alsa.conf according to headfi
(## are the old settings)
## defaults.ctl.card 0
defaults.ctl.card 2
## defaults.pcm.card 0
defaults.pcm.card 2However, even after lots of finicking, installing pulseaudio-alsa, pavucontrol, I still cannot get this to work. I'm also running XFCE on linux-zen so is the kernel the problem?
Ultimately it's so hard to even TELL if alsa/pulse is mixing audio or if my motherboard's sound card is being used or the usb dac. Is there an easier way to tell? So many solutions are are so long and strung out with complex system file mods but there should be a much easier way for me to verify this.

That config will break pulse in case of an ALSA lib application, you shouldn't use it if you intend to use pulseaudio install pulseaudio-alsa instead
As for ways of identifying what exactly is being done post (and read over the info provided in)
pacmd list-cards
pacmd list-sinks
pacmd list-sink-inputs #during playback
#Just for some general checks
amixer -c2
sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*Offline
Ok I have reversed the changes to the alsa.conf.
EDIT: My goal is to just use pulse to facilitate the alsa audio like I honestly just want the highest quality audio possible so if there is a better way of going about that I'd rather know
here is the relevant output!

The SPDIF part is available as a distinct profile, switch to it:
pacmd set-card-profile alsa_card.usb-Schiit_Audio_Schiit_Modi_3-00 output:iec958-stereowhich "mixer" application are you looking at? This is usually switchable in a "configuration" tab/subsection (at least that's the case for pavucontrol, might be different for other tools)
I honestly just want the highest quality audio
That seemingly simple desire has a lot of technical specialities and pitfalls depends on a lot of factors and can be quite subjective from person to person. If all you ever configured on fedora is to just use SPDIF then the above will lead to that same end result. Dependiing on what you actually want here you can configure quite a lot more, but as mentioned this does really depend on what you expect and what input sources you are going to use. A pretty important principle here is that you can only open the audio device "once" and need to determine with which parameters you want to do that with before you are going to send audio and everything after that has to follow suit . There are many people that want to ensure that whatever input signal (e.g. music/videos/whatever) is not altered, in which case you will want to configure pulse to "avoid-resampling = true" in your /etc/pulse/daemon.conf which will lead to pulse reconfiguring the DAC to accept the same format of the first input whenever that is possible. Others want the "highest sample rate" possible, even if that means you'd use CPU cycles to upsample lower sampled inputs to the new target rate, in which case you want to keep avoid-resampling = false and instead adjust the default-sample-rate to the desired value. There are a lot of options here but it's a bit out of scope for the thread. The defaults are "safe" and will work for the majority of usecases.

thankyouthankyouthankyou this helped me a lot and I hope it helps however sees it! I assume at this point even though I'm just messing around my problem (lack of knowledge) has been solved lmao
EDIT: That command worked beautifully too! And mixer is pavucontrol! Works nice in XFCE w pulse dock plugin
