nvidia tty low to no resolution

Hi,
I have a Nvidia 560ti and have the drivers (nvidia-390xx-dkms) installed for this card. I am not able to see what I am typing in the tty after boot if I have no kernel mode setting set. I set it to vga=773, which is the maximum I could get (I played around with syslinux' resolution manager). However, it still is a very low resolution, because my screen has a resolution of 1920x1080. There is also a black border around the screen, as if that is the thing restricting the full resolution.

In X I got everything working, though. It doesn't have the wide black border of unused pixels. But if I quit my window manager, I don't get my TTY to see again.

With the nouveau driver, the TTY has a full 1920x1080 resolution, but video-heavy stuff doesn't run smoothly (it does this with the nvidia-390xx-dkms).

Does anybody have an idea on how I could remove the black border? These problems look like they are all part of one big thing I forgot.
Thanks, Jan van Rossum

Re: nvidia tty low to no resolution

That's for grub...
I'll go look for something similar for syslinux
