I just booted, started X11 and noticed immediately that my keyboard map wasn't working properly -- for example the Windows key (Mod4), which I use for most window manager-related actions, wasn't working at all anymore.
Then I saw that "setxkbmap <anykeymap>" would result in an error. The output on tty1 (from where I start X11) showed why: it couldn't write to /var/tmp/<something>. I then noticed that the permissions of /var/tmp were "drwxr-xr-x root root". I changed it to "drwxrwxrwt root root" (exactly like /tmp -- I hope that's how it should be), et voila. setxkbmap worked again.
I don't know what exactly caused this permission change, but I guess it was after an update (pacman -Syu) I did yesterday before shutting down.
If so, it's maybe worth a bug report. Though I don't know any details.
I just thought I'd post it for others who are maybe running into that problem.
