can't get display to work with nvidia drivers...

hi everyone,
on my new system i can't get my nvidia geforce 6600 to work with the proprietary drivers.

i went through a new xorg.conf hassle to get a working display. vesa driver was suggested, it worked but slowly. nv driver works somewhat slowly as well.

using nvidia driver 8774, screen goes blank, my monitor fells asleep, and i don't have a clue about what's going on. i cannot switch to a text-based console (ctrl+alt+F2), all i can do i ctrl+alt+backspace to restart (?) X server, and after a few second, my system seems to reboot by itself.

any advice is appreciated. thanks !

i don't get it though... you video card uses very generic settings (just like my video card device section in my first post)... i plugged back my old 22" CRT monitor, but same trouble arose...

i suppose my new video card doesn't like nvidia drivers sad

there seems to be troubles with acpi and edid frequencies. i tried to uncomment the UseEdidFreqs line, with no luck.

i don't have any idea about what to try next...

Just a suggestion :

if you are using xdm/gdm/kdm/slim (or any graphical login manager) disable them for now, so you will get to console login.

login as root from console and run startx.

This SHOULD enable you to see the output X11 gives on the console.

As this uses the simple wmaker as WM/DE , it will help in determining if the problem is with X11 or with another program.


Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

i use kde and kdm, but i surely did try that. however i cannot read any output because the screen goes blank, and after, say, 20 seconds, my monitor switches to stand-by mode.
then at this point i don't know what to do (i tried to switch to another console, restart X, nothing works and monitor stays in stand-by mode). when i had DPMS enabled, i was able to wake my monitor up (don't ask me how...), but it remained blank and my system eventually rebooted by itself (hard-reboot, though, because this activated disk-checking on next boot).

all this makes me thinks it's somehow related to ACPI or something like that. or hardware-related...

these actually _are_ my monitor specs. on the very first post i used an LCD monitor. then i switched back to my old CRT monitor and specs are correct.

both monitors display a message whenever sync is out of range. this actually doesn't happen with the present trouble. still, if they went out of range, i should be able to restart X, but i can't.

these frequencies work fine with nv drivers (the very same xorg.conf using nv instead of nvidia works ok).

, that's what i had to do so it generates an acceptible XF86Xonfig/xorg.conf ....
what was different in the original xorg.conf, is a mistery to me but it seemded  to work...

yes i tried that already. it did only very basic changes : nv driver was changed to nvidia and the order was changed a bit as well. not much that could help...

I have the same problem.

nvidia-xconfig did not change the situation for me either.

Interesting to be sure.

Videocard: e-GeForce 7600 GT.

Have you contacted nVidia or searched the forums?


If is not broken ... tweak it

i had some issues with nvidia myself i just used the nv figuring it was an issue that would workout in time. i did try grabbing nvidia sourcre & compiled to no avail then i tried messing with xorg.conf i figured out my problem when i disabled the

    Load       "glx"

it worked boy was i happy to see that nvidia logo so i reenabled glx & it didnt work so i did a

pacman -Ss opengl

came up with some stuff heres what i have installed not sure which is the fix

pacman -Qs opengl
 xgl-git mesa glproto-git glitz-cvs freeglut

if any of it was my fix but i know i installed or reinstalled whats listed & nvidia module now works

glx is needed by nvidia module, isn't it ? i tried without glx but nvidia module complained about glx missing...

oddly enough, my video card seems to be detected as a Geforce Go 6600 GT whereas it is only supposed to be a Geforce 6600 (not Go nor GT)...
