Same old fatal error problem... Any solutions?

HI friends,

I've been trying to install arch for quite sometime, but there is some or other problem. Lately, I installed only the base and then tried to install xfce4 with pacman. That did not install xorg automatically as it is mentioned at lot of places in the forum. Then I installed xorg and ran xorgconfig. Then when trying startxfce4, I get the fatal error screen. searched through the forum and installed xf86-video-i810 and libgl-dri and also tried running hwd -x then copying xorg.conf.hwd to xorg.conf. But nothing seems to work. Here are my xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log files.

You also need to install some fonts like xorg-fonts-75dpi or xorg-fonts-100dpi

DO I need to reconfigure xorg or reinstall xfce after installing the fonts.

Hm, if you installed with pacman the fonts cache should be automatically updated ..

Why does it use /root/xorg.conf instead of /etc/X11/xorg.conf?? Can your X start if you just run "Xorg"?

I have installed Arch and a couple of other systems starting with a base and then adding xserver and xfce. Here is what I suggest. Uninstall everything you have installed since you finished the base installation. Then install: xorg, xorg-apps, xorg-xdm, xterm, xf86-video-<your>. This should also install: xorg-twm, xorg-fonts-100dpi, xorg-fonts-75dpi and xorg-fonts-type1.

Then execute xorgconfig and set up your X server. You need to know what type keyboard, mouse, video card and monitor you have, and such details as horizontal and vertical sync of the monitor, video card memory, which resolutions you want, etc.

After you have configured the x server and written /etc/X11/xorg.conf, execute startx. It should bring up a simple GUI with two xterm windows. type exit at the command prompts to return to the Arch CLI.

If you get a failure, you don't have the x server configured correctly. There is no reason to install xfce or anything else until you get the simple GUI with startx. Report back your results.
