[SOLVED] How to restore pulseaudio automatic detection of sound cards?

Background

I recently got a Dell XPS 17 (9700).

In order to have the sound working, I manually installed soundwire-dkms, as per the instructions specific to this machine on the Arch wiki. It worked and was fine through a number of updates.

During an update a few days ago, I got the following error message:

This lead me back to the XPS 17 wiki page and I realized that a note had been added, mentioning that soundwire-dkms was no longer necessary and that things should now work out of the box.

Now, instead of properly uninstalling soundwire-dkms, then uninstalling dkms and the other packages I no longer need, for some silly reason, I uninstalled the pacman packages first, then realized that I was left with all the soundwire-dkms files and I went about to manually delete them. Of course, it was messy and a bad idea and I think that this is where things went wrong. I am now trying to fix things up.


Problem

Pulseaudio only displays dummy output (for output) and monitor of dummy output (for sink).

My soundcards and alsa seem to be ok (I think).

aplay -l

According to the pulseaudio wiki:

By default, PulseAudio is configured to automatically detect all sound cards and manage them.

I think that I messed that up, somehow, when I tried to manually uninstall soundwire-dkms.

In any event, this automatic detection by pulseaudio does not seem to be the case for me anymore and this is what I am trying to restore.


First attempts
  • I tried reinstalling pulseaudio

  • I stopped the pulseaudio daemon, deleted all files in ~/.config/pulse, then rebooted

Neither helped.

The wiki page says to intall sof-firmware what doesn't sound as if the nvidia HDA is the only card.
Please post the outputs of "lspci", "lsusb" and "sudo journalctl -b"

Note that I uninstalled sof-firmware since the note says that things should now work out of the box.

So, of the 4 packages mentioned in that XPS 17 Wiki page (dkms, linux-headers, pulseaudio, and sof-firmware), I only kept pulseaudio.

Uh oh... Your message made me question whether I should have uninstalled sof-firmware actually.

I just reinstalled it to test and all is good now.

So the problem had nothing to do with my messy manual uninstallation of soundwire-dkms as I thought. Instead, it had to do with the fact that I uninstalled sof-firmware.

What surprises me though is that I don't remember ever installing sof-firmware on other machines. And it is not mentioned in the pulseaudio Wiki page. I will check whether it is actually installed on my old machine as I am really curious now.

In any event, thank you very much seth. You solved my problem with that little sentence smile

I just checked and sof-firmware is not installed on my old Dell (which has the same set-up as my new XPS 17).

So, if I understand things correctly, that note is not quite correct and for the sound to work on the XPS 17, sof-firmware seems required.

Unless someone points out here that I am missing something, I will edit that note.

Yeah, the article note is misleading. sof-soundwire is (apparently) no longer required, but you're gonna need the firmware for the HW no matter what.
