[Solved] Boot stuck at "starting version 247.2-1-arch"

Hello

I did yesterday a full update, which I think I hadn't done in 4-6 weeks. The system refuses to boot, and stays on the black screen "starting version 247.2-1-arch", at which point I can see the screen resolution change once and then nothing happens (I've waited at least 10 minutes).

What I've tried :
* booting on fallback initramfs - no change
* I've booted in a live key with arch-root and installed the LTS kernel. When booting on it the result is the same
* following dumbly this page this page I've tried to remove xf86-video-intel - no change

I've looked at journalctl ; I see a recurring pattern of failures and systemd-coredump, apparently linked to polkit.service. It seems that polkitd segfaults right after "starting authorization manager". I don't have an easy way to paste the logs here, but if it helps I can plug another key to copy them or even take a photo smile

Do you have an advice ? Thanks !

Re: [Solved] Boot stuck at "starting version 247.2-1-arch"

If you do:

command |& curl -F 'f:1=<-' ix.io

it'll spit out a url that'll contain whatever the command was that you could type in here.

Ex.

$ whoami |& curl -F 'f:1=<' ix.io
http://ix.io/2Lnh

The two idea's I have:
Update again from within the arch-chroot.

$pacman -Rs polkit
$pacman -S polkit

[EDIT] Formatting

Re: [Solved] Boot stuck at "starting version 247.2-1-arch"

Hi, thanks. You said you had two ideas ?

I couldn't do pacman -R because polkit was needed by other packages and I didn't look how to force the removal. The pacman -S reinstalled the package but it didn't change anything on the boot. I see this time a line appearing on screen every 30s or so, saying "[FAILED] Failed to start Authorization Manager." I had seen it once before, but not every time, which is awkward.
I'll try to really remove all dependencies and reinstall polkit.

Thanks for the tip on how to post something from command line. What could I post which could be useful ?

Re: [Solved] Boot stuck at "starting version 247.2-1-arch"

glibc up to date and corruption free,  rules that out.
So expanding to check the rest of the system:

# pacman -Qkk 2>&1 | grep -Fv '0 altered files'

I do not see anything that would explain the issue in the output.

Re: [Solved] Boot stuck at "starting version 247.2-1-arch"

Boot the multi-user.target (1st link in my signature, this should work since polkit is invoked by accounts-daemon which is invoked by GDM) and post the output of

$ ldd /usr/lib/polkit-1/polkitd

The run

# strace /usr/lib/polkit-1/polkitd 2>&1 | tee /tmp/polkit.strace

(You must run that from a root shell, "sudo strace …" won't work)

and upload that file (could be too long, the tail is gonna be more interesting than the head)

Re: [Solved] Boot stuck at "starting version 247.2-1-arch"

Let's go w/ the nearest match.

stat /usr/lib/libgpg-error.so.0
pacman -Qo /usr/lib/libgpg-error.so.0
pacman -Qikk libgpg-error

Re: [Solved] Boot stuck at "starting version 247.2-1-arch"

FYI I just tried to reinstall libgpg-error after deleting the package in /var/cache/pacman, but after running "gdm" nothing happens and then I see the same polkitd segfault in dmesg output.

Re: [Solved] Boot stuck at "starting version 247.2-1-arch"

The pacman -Qkk output has a bunch of stray tokens in it - did you edit it somehow (or worse: copy and pasted it from the terminal)?

Re: [Solved] Boot stuck at "starting version 247.2-1-arch"

What is a stray token ? I just redirected the commands and their results in a file and edited it to insert two line feeds for readability between the 3 commands, it's all I did.

Re: [Solved] Boot stuck at "starting version 247.2-1-arch"

Comparing the outputs of the two pacman -Qikk that I provided in this thread, I noticed that the first is in english, made from arch-root on my system after a boot from a usb key, and the second is in french, made from my system booted in multi-user target. And it seems that the "None" are localized by "--" in french, could it be what you were talking about ?

Re: [Solved] Boot stuck at "starting version 247.2-1-arch"

This file https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 0#p1949360
"ered files" is the tail of "somethingsomething altered files" and so is probably "les", "c/shells (Size mismatch)" should be "/etc/shells (Size mismatch)" …
There're more of those what makes the file look edited or copy-pasted from the stdout

This means the output is compromised and we cannot be sure that a crucial line wasn't lost.

I see, you're right... I promise I didn't tamper in any way, I even think I redirected the output to ix.io directly. I'll do it again right now.

Re: [Solved] Boot stuck at "starting version 247.2-1-arch"

The truncated lines appear when I use " 2>&1", I don't understand why... I made separately :
# pacman -Qkk 2>file --> http://ix.io/2LSq
# pacman -Qkk | grep -Fv '0 fichier modifié' > file --> http://ix.io/2LSs

Re: [Solved] Boot stuck at "starting version 247.2-1-arch"

2>&1 redirects stderr into stdout, but there should™ be no collision… I wonder whether that's related to your polkit situation.

echo $SHELL
stat /bin/sh

Also run

LC_ALL=C LD_DEBUG=all /usr/lib/polkit-1/polkitd > ~/very.big.ld.debug.file 2>&1

You'll probably have to use a google drive or so to upload that - in doubt post at least the tail…

"there should™ be no collision" --> yes, I've never seen that. I thought the same as you.

My $SHELL is /bin/bash for root. stat /bin/sh gives this : http://ix.io/2LUD

I'll now run the last command you asked.

Re: [Solved] Boot stuck at "starting version 247.2-1-arch"

Okay, it was quick. The commands with polkitd exits in about half a second and gives a segmentation fault in the console, with a core dump.

The resulting file is here : http://ix.io/2LUE
