Vmplayer

I may have asked this before but I am trying to get Arch to run under vmplayer

Install into virtual machine was no problem but vmnet/vmxnet module will not load under it

Do I need to rebuild kernel to get module to load or can I do it another way?

TIA

MrG

Re: Vmplayer

In a typical vm archlinux  detects the network card as pcnet32.
To get the vmxnet module you need to have vmware tools installed INSIDE the VM.

I'm not sure if it is possible to add vmware tools to a vmplayer virtual machine, but Installing_archlinux_in_VMWare gives info about installing vmware tools in a vm using vmware workstation.

I wrote most of that wiki page and also got vmxnet loaded, although i didn't see any change in performance over pcnet32 .

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: Vmplayer

Ok pcnet32 loads now thank you but ifconfig (eth0) does not show up...

What connection settings do you use for ethernet Bridged NAT etc...

How to I get Arch VM to see eth0 ?

Not much use without a network connection ;-)

Re: Vmplayer

I use bridging with dhcp , haven't tried the other possibilities in an arch vm sofar.

Are the vmware services started on your host ?

I got a big speed increase after getting vmxnet working smile

Also, there is an issue with vmxnet in 5.5.3 tools with a 2.6.19 Linux guest, at least with my 5.5.3 build-34685 and Arch's 2.6.19, 12DEC06 kernel.  I successfully applied the fix (link to the fix at the bottom of the wiki page)
