Unable to connect to mobile hotspot, R8188EU: indicate disassoc

I was a happy Arch Linux user, but with the release of 5.10 kernels, I am not able to connect to my phone or tablet's hotspot but can connect to my wifi.

I am using TP-Link WN725N wifi adapter. Whenever I try to connect to my phone's hotspot, on my phone, I can see one device (my laptop) is connected, but on my laptop network-manager-applet on the xfce4 panel just keeps spinning and then it disconnects, then the process continues for very long time.

Whenever I see it fails to connect, and I run dmesg, the output from dmesg is:

The hotspot of my phone has ESSID of "OpenSSL::SSL::SSLError".

If I disable the wifi security on the hotspot, my laptop w/ 5.10+ can connect to it. If I then enable the security I can connect to it.

The NetworkManager version is 1.28.1dev+7+g3f5df3cdc6-1, but I have also downgraded network manager to 1.28.0-1 and 1.28.0-2, but that didn't help either.

I am using the 5.9.9 (Xanmod) kernel because I have that compiled. Getting anything from 5.10.1 to 5.10.7 (stock ones from arch repo) doesn't fix this issue at all.

Because it's 5.10.7 now and it doesn't seem to be working which makes me worry if it's going to get fixed at all in the later kernels. Does anyone having similar issue know how to fix this problem without downgrading the kernel?

Edit After Trying wifi-menu:
The wifi-menu also has similar effect. It kind of connects to my phone, and when I run dhcpcd manually, I get:

$ sudo dhcpcd
dhcpcd-9.4.0 starting

You really need to post journal/dmesg information to debug this.

Sorry I forgot that part, and I immediately edited my post and added the info... Anyway, I have journaling disabled because I am using an SSD and journaling writes a lot... So I can only go with dmesg...

That is a terrible idea. One it is what an SSD is designed to do, and two it completely hamstrings you when you want to determine what is going on with your system.

Also, use code, not quote, tags: your dmesg is truncated so it is not possible to read the actual messages.

Ok so I have enabled journald, and then ran

sudo journalctl -u NetworkManager

Heres' the output:

sudo journalctl -u NetworkManager

I have pasted the full output, and it's now connected to my wifi router which has ESSID of ArchLinux, on my phone hostpot with ESSID "OpenSSL::SSL:ERROR", I get the error, same problem with my tablet as well. After a few retries it connects to my wifi router successfully. That's the problem in the first place, can't connect to hotspot. As I have said I have tried 5.4 to 5.9.9 after purchasing this adapter, none had the problem...

Re: Unable to connect to mobile hotspot, R8188EU: indicate disassoc

Hello,
(Excuse my English)
i think i have the same problem,
since kernel 5.10 no internet via R8188EU

no problem without WPA/WPA2, or with LTS Kernel

with https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/8188eu-dkms-git/ no problem
unfortunately my CPU is at 100% with every kernel update

Re: Unable to connect to mobile hotspot, R8188EU: indicate disassoc

Just an update, if you follow the older problems, the solution is to add

wifi.scan-rand-mac-address=no

under the [device] section, in NetworkManager.conf. But this problem doesn't go away with this. Only downgrading the kernel is viable solution!

Re: Unable to connect to mobile hotspot, R8188EU: indicate disassoc

It seems like you should bisect the kernel:

You could also try to do the bisection only with the wifi module:

git clone https://github.com/torvalds/linux
--- update, reboot to kernel v5.10 ---

cd /path/to/your/cloned/linux

git checkout v5.9
cd drivers/staging/rtl8188eu
make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=$PWD ccflags-y+=-I'$(PWD)/include'
sudo rmmod r8188eu
sudo insmod r8188eu
# verify that the old driver works with the new kernel

# start the bisection
cd /path/to/your/cloned/linux
git bisect start v5.10 v5.9 -- drivers/staging/rtl8188eu

# repeat the following
make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M="$PWD/drivers/staging/rtl8188eu" ccflags-y+=-I'$(PWD)/drivers/staging/rtl8188eu/include'
sudo rmmod r8188eu
sudo insmod drivers/staging/rtl8188eu/r8188eu.ko
# test wifi
# then choose either:
git bisect good
# or
git bisect bad
# repeat make ...

Re: Unable to connect to mobile hotspot, R8188EU: indicate disassoc

The problem isn't yet fixed. I am afraid of doing the git bisect, my PC has i3 4th gen processor and compiling kernel takes 1 hour 20 minutes (yes, I measured with the time command). I have to just keep using the older 5.9.9 I have so far.

Re: Unable to connect to mobile hotspot, R8188EU: indicate disassoc

That is why I suggested you try to bisect and compile only the realtek module and not the whole kernel. That may not work if the bug is somewhere else in the kernel, but it should be fast. You will know if you can get a result when you compile the 5.9 module for the 5.10 kernel once at the beginning and it restores your internet connection.

Hello,
I also use TP-Link WN725N and it does not connect to android hotspot. Very rarely after multiple attempts it might connect but usually does not.

It seems that below commit has caused the issue :
"f53ae8193fdb8cdd671dcf122dec0e9cca5ed2ba is the first bad commit"

Here is what i did. Just writing it down as i do not know much and i deviated a bit (using google) from your instructions.

1) Full linux download is a bit too much as i have limited quota. So i did incremental fetch until 75 which seemed to have covered beyond 5.9

git clone --depth=1 https://github.com/torvalds/linux
git fetch --depth=75

2) module built on v5.9 was good

3) Bisect gave me problem

git bisect start v5.10 v5.9 -- drivers/staging/rtl8188eu

Output

Updating files: 100% (14756/14756), done.
Previous HEAD position was be1dd6692a Merge tag 'perf-tools-fixes-for-v5.10-2020-11-17' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/acme/linux
HEAD is now at bbf5c97901 Linux 5.9
Bisecting: -1 revisions left to test after this (roughly 0 steps)

4) I tested on latest commit and problem was there. So i started bisect in this way

git bisect start -- drivers/staging/rtl8188eu
git bisect bad
git bisect good v5.9

5) This worked and here is the full bisect log

git bisect start '--' 'drivers/staging/rtl8188eu'

Thank you for instructions. Long long time ago i did bisect on kernel on a slow laptop and that was very tedious. This was much simpler.
What next ? I guess we need to report bug somewhere.

Re: Unable to connect to mobile hotspot, R8188EU: indicate disassoc

That can't be the problem, that commit is not in a released kernel yet. Without a full kernel download (at least everything between v5.9 and v5.10) bisecting is not really possible. (I think you currently have 75 commits before master and 75 before  v5.9. You are missing everything in between).

Re: Unable to connect to mobile hotspot, R8188EU: indicate disassoc

I did full kernel download, below is the result of bisect

eca1d82ea858044a27fa95c498cc0835a0b2e17a is the first bad commit
commit eca1d82ea858044a27fa95c498cc0835a0b2e17a
Author: Michael Straube <straube.linux@gmail.com>
Date: Sun Sep 27 10:35:35 2020 +0200

staging: rtl8188eu: Reapply "staging:r8188eu: Use lib80211 to encrypt (CCMP) tx frames"

Commit 515ce733e86e ("staging:r8188eu: Use lib80211 to encrypt (CCMP) tx frames")
was reverted because it caused scheduling while atomic bugs and hard
freezes. Experimentation showed that there were no freezes and no BUG
messages logged when lib80211_get_crypto_ops() was called directly
    rather than indirectly through try_then_request_module().

Reapply "staging:r8188eu: Use lib80211 to encrypt (CCMP) tx frames"
with resolved revert conflicts and replace try_then_request_module()
    with direct call to lib80211_get_crypto_ops().

    Original commit message:
Put data to skb, decrypt with lib80211_crypt_ccmp, and place back to tx buffer.

Please note that the bad drivers sometimes do work (after multiple tries) and once they do, they all generally continue to work even after loading known bad version. Very irritating.
Usually i had to reset android device and reconnect usb device to get it to stop working again.

So bisect bad is accurate but bisect good may be faulty.
Just fyi, i think result should be ok as i tested good multiple times and also made sure 'modprobe r8188eu' fails as installed driver should fail.
Last bad result for instance was working initially and only after resetting everything i started seeing failure ( and then it continued to fail).

That can't be the problem, that commit is not in a released kernel yet. Without a full kernel download (at least everything between v5.9 and v5.10) bisecting is not really possible. (I think you currently have 75 commits before master and 75 before  v5.9. You are missing everything in between).

Hello, does the new bisect look ok ?
As of now i am loading module from 5.9 which works without issue.
