2nd monitor won't display in non-mirrored mode

Hi all,

I'm trying to get a 2 monitor setup working, with one monitor being my laptop's display and another an external monitor hooked up via HDMI (through a USB-C adapter, since my laptop doesn't have a physical HDMI port).

I've tried this with both dwm on X11 and sway for wayland. On X11, when the server starts up the displays are in mirrored mode, and xrandr reports:
