i have 2 recognised sound devices using the latest pulseaudio

i normally run audio from device-1. hdmi cable from the videocard to the monitor. audio jack from monitor to speaker. device-2 is the onboard motherboard sound. there are 2 headphone jacks - on the motherboard and one connected to the motherboard on the case. i was previously able to plug in the headphones into the jack on the case and sound would switch to the headphones. unplug and sound switches back to device-1. plug headphones back in to the case, sound switches to the headphones.
current behaviour
i hardly use the headphones so i amnot sure at what doing the upgrade path the above stopped working. now if i want to ue the headphones, i have to make sure i boot into arch with the headphones plugged in. if i boot without them plugged in (or remove them after boot), then when i plug them in they are not picked up

active port: <hdmi-output-1>i have now lost a sink
pulseaudio -k when the headphones are plugged in restores sound to the headphones. but i shouldn’t have to do this manually everytime. especially when it used to do it automatically
and it looks like it should be able to switch
