Massively reduced runtime by plugging in Thunderbolt adapter to Laptop

I'm running Arch Linux on a Toshiba Portégé X20W-D.
When I plug in a HDMI+VGA-adapter to the Thunderbolt port, the expected runtime shown by cbatticon goes down from 12h+ to about 6h when fully charged.
