problems with jre, firefox, ... path related, I think

Recently, I've not been able to run programs like firefox - i.e. those residing in /opt/ - without giving the full path. This in other words means that I can't run any java based programs from the start scripts (since they just refer to "java", and I get errors like "java not found")
I'm not sure when this started, but I think it was when zsh was updated (and it was moved to /bin). I don't know if that has had anything to do with it, but it's the only thing I can think of. Anyone else had the same problem, or know what might have caused it? I suppose I can solve it by adding the /opt/ paths to my zshenv, but I never like it when I don't know what happens.
On a similar note, why doesn't the entries in /etc/profiles.d have any effect? Both firefox and java are there, but they are still not found in the path. Is this because I use zsh?
