Sometimes, after a system upgrade, the built-in SD card reader on my laptop (ThinkPad x230 with Coreboot) stops working. When I reboot, it starts working again.
When I insert an SD card, I get the following in dmesg. (sbd1 was the USB stick I plugged in to check if that was affected too. Then, I removed the SD card, switched to root, inserted the SD card, and ran dmesg.)

I'm guessing this has something to do with kernel/systemd modules or gvfs being upgraded, but I have no idea how to investigate. Has anyone had a similar problem? Does anyone know how I might solve this? It would be nice to have the new packages not step on the toes of the already-running stuff.

This is normal when the kernel is updated. An update removes all of the old modules, so if your running kernel needs a not yet loaded module, it can't load it and thus you need to reboot after a kernel update. If you want to preempt this you'd need to load all the modules of relevancy before the update (... diff an lsmod from before adding an sd card/the reader with after, add the relevant modules to /etc/modules.load.d) or alternatively set up something like https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/kernel-modules-hook

Ah, that makes sense. That's slightly surprising that it doesn't leave the old modules behind, similar to cached packages. Thanks for the answer. ![]()
