[FIXED] ksystemstats memory leak

Has anyone else encountered ksystemstats running wild with memory usage? It seems to keep expanding to use all available memory, e.g. ~12 GB below. OTOH it's introduced me to the excellent earlyoom, which is doing a great job of saving my system!

# journalctl -u earlyoom
...
Feb 01 09:13:12 my_hostname earlyoom[533]: mem avail: 3199 of 31998 MiB (10.00%), swap free: 0 of 0 MiB ( 0.00%)
Feb 01 09:13:12 my_hostname earlyoom[533]: low memory! at or below SIGTERM limits: mem 10.00%, swap 10.00%
Feb 01 09:13:12 my_hostname earlyoom[533]: sending SIGTERM to process 1000360 uid 1000 "ksystemstats": badness 369, VmRSS 11784 MiB
Feb 01 09:13:12 my_hostname earlyoom[533]: process exited after 0.1 seconds
Feb 01 10:11:22 my_hostname earlyoom[533]: mem avail: 14659 of 31998 MiB (45.81%), swap free: 0 of 0 MiB ( 0.00%)

I can only find one other reference to ksystemstats and memory issues, in the Manjaro forum, but I'm seeing it on at least two of my Arch systems on totally different computers.

Yes. I saw this today.  It also appears that the /etc/ksysguarddrc  file was last updated Jan 5, 2021.

Re: [FIXED] ksystemstats memory leak

Mine was updated around that time too, apparently as part of the ksysguard package itself.

Also, when I kill ksystemstats, I notice that my monitoring plasmoids stop working. I'm not sure if the memory leak is related to those plasmoids, since from the lack of activity here, it doesn't appear to be a widely-spread problem for most Arch/KDE users.

Re: [FIXED] ksystemstats memory leak

The monitoring applets have had issues in the past with memleaks they've been rewritten to use ksysguard/ksystemstats as a backend and potentially relevant issues have come up again. FWIW the only monitoring widget i use is the disk usage one and can't say I've noticed a  leak. I'd say try to check whether you can isolate to a specific monitoring widget.

Thanks for that info V1del. Yeah, worth having a shot I guess. TBH the KDE devs seem to ignore many bug reports, but maybe I can use to another plasmoid instead. I'll remove some plasmoids and report back here soon.

EDIT: oddly enough one of my Arch systems has been rock solid with ksystemstats for the last 12 days, whereas the other system is still going crazy. Interestingly, in the first system I'm getting memory leaks in kwin_x11 now. earlyoom just killed it while it was consuming 14 GB.

EDIT2: FWIW this seems to have resolved it, perhaps with ksysguard 5.20.5-1 -> 5.21.0-1. I don't see any leaks with either ksystemstats or kwin_x11.

EDIT3: Ugh, maybe not entirely fixed, or at least just moved to another component. This morning plasmashell was using 12 GB.

Thanks kolAflash. I still have massive memory leaks in plasmashell and kwin, although I'm not entirely sure if it's still ksystemstats that is causing it. I just kill them every few hours. I even bought more RAM recently, just for KDE's various leaks. I'm glad someone filed the bug, although I feel like my previous statement was vindicated!
