Can't boot on kernels 5.10 or 5.11 after hardware update

After upgrading my hardware from:

  • AMD FX 6300     -> AMD RYZEN 5 5600X

  • MSI MOBO(can't remember, sorry) -> Gigabyte B550m DS3H

My system is unable to boot, I reach as far enough as selecting my install with Grub and then the boot just stucks at:

Loading Linux linux ...
Loading inital ramdisk ...

Until now, I've used the linux-lts kernel with no problems, but now that it updated to 5.10 I can't boot to it anymore, neither can I boot into the newer 5.11 kernel.

As a temporary fix I guess I could downgrade the linux-lts package into what it was before (5.4 I think), but I really would like to be able to run the newer kernel.

Also the Arch LiveISO won't work either (neither Arch derivatives), so I guess it ain't a problem related to my install but my hardware and the kernel, tho I couldn't find any other problem with them and linux.

A little more detail on how was the process:

  • I've had my old system with 5.10, everything fine.

  • I've upgraded my hardware and the boot hangs there where I say on the post.

  • After trying different LiveISOs I realize that those with kernel 5.10 won't boot.

  • I move my ssd to my laptop and install linux-lts and nvidia-lts (at that moment that was 5.4)

  • Get my ssd back to may desktop and everything works great, for a couple weeks.

  • Yesterday I accidentally updated linux-lts (and nvidia-lts) without knowing that it now is 5.10, and my system hangs on boot. I've also tried the new 5.11 with the same result.

Any idea on how I could fix or at least troubleshot this? I would really like to keep using Arch!

Since it seem to be kernel related I've posted here, sorry if it isn't the right section! I'll move it if necessary

Re: Can't boot on kernels 5.10 or 5.11 after hardware update

Have you tried the  2020.12.01 release of the Arch ISO which uses 5.9.11 or older releases to see if only 5.10 and 5.11 will not boot?
Did you upgrade the GPU as well?

I haven't upgraded my GPU (it's a Nvidia GTX 960), I'm actually on my way on burning that iso to check, also I'll use it to install linux-lts54 to have as a backup

Did you try to add these options:

 initcall_debug earlycon=efifb

to see if it gives more debug messages as happened to me (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 5#p1957285)? It would be interesting to understand if the freeze happens with the same message as mine (in my cse it is a random freeze though)

Maybe related with this: https://archlinux.org/news/moving-to-zs … kinitcpio/

Now mkinitcpio 30 is currently in stable.

Fixed now!!
It ended up being that I needed to upgrade my BIOS, I guess it was just a coincidence that the old lts kernel did work at all!

I am having this problem as well. What should I do with mkinitcpio again?
