linux-5.11.1-arch1.1 has caused my Xorg to Crash from second monitor

I have a secondary monitor which is an Acer G276HL monitor. I originally wasn't able to start X, and it would simply crash, so i commented about everything out of my .xinitrc, and found the culprit to be the command "xrandr --output DVI-D-1-2 --primary --left-of DP-3 --auto". I have tried to run many modifications of this command and any command I run which attempts to send video output to this monitor cause what appears to be an Xorg crash, as The screen goes black except for the mouse, and my mouse and keyboard become unresponsive. My suspicion is that there is some driver which I rely on to use that monitor, which is in conflict with linux-5.11.1-arch1-1. Note that my Second Monitor is connected to the GPU(AMD Radeon R9 390x), so this could potentially be a full GPU issue not just the monitor.

Here is some info
xrandr

i commented about everything out of my .xinitrc, and found the culprit

Please post the xinitrc.

Re: linux-5.11.1-arch1.1 has caused my Xorg to Crash from second monitor

I don't think this is particularly useful as the only thing which runs in it now is exec xmonad.
But since you want to see it.

# dual monitor
#xrandr --output DVI-D-1-2 --primary --left-of DP-3 --auto
#xrandr --output DP-3 --right-of DVI-D-1-2
#xrandr --output DP-3 --off
#xrandr --output DVI-D-1-2 --auto --primary
#
xtheme ayu &
picom &

# WM
exec xmonad
#exec herbstluftwm --locked

xtheme just runs xrdb and applies some theming, this appears to have no effect on the situation, as well as picom appearing to have no effect on the situation.
Again the issue happens when i run the command "xrandr --output DVI-DV-1-2" with any setup. The problem seems to be specific to outputting to this particular monitor, or related to the GPU it is plugged into.

Re: linux-5.11.1-arch1.1 has caused my Xorg to Crash from second monitor

That's actually very useful because
a) you need to redirect the output, see link in #2
b) your xinitrc is broken, see the link in my signature :-P

Re: linux-5.11.1-arch1.1 has caused my Xorg to Crash from second monitor

I'm gonna look into getting the redirect working.

However I'm still not sure why you think my xinitrc is broken. It's always worked for me, and your link to prove that its broken is what I used to figure out what I need in it, and how to set it up. Could you explain what specifically is broken about it? My guess would be that It doesn't follow the generic template. But It's a config file, and I'm fairly certain the template is a guide not a requirement. My other guess would be having 2 exec commands, but I always have one of them commented out, and Im aware that commands after an exec command don't get run.

Edit: this is required in order to get an active session from the systemd POV which will in turn be required to access/mount several devices, reboot etc. w/o requiring you to be root.

I tried to do this by following the directions but substitting my own system options in, and it complained about using amd. then I read the page a bit more and it says specifically that this doesn't work with AMD GPUS, which I have. So I don't believe this solution is going to work for my system, If it is I dont have the know-how or resources available to make it work.

It's not supported by AMD + NVIDIA, but you've AMD and an intel chip.

Please post the output of

xrandr --listproviders

Re: linux-5.11.1-arch1.1 has caused my Xorg to Crash from second monitor

Unfortunately I cannot, and I think this is the end of the thread.

In attempting to work out a solution I broke my entire computer, appears to have ruined the motherboard.

I was attempting to figure out for certain if it was a hardware issue with the monitor or a GPU issue as I was still uncertain. SO i plugged in another monitor from a friend into the motherboard slot, and it worked fine. I plugged it in to the GPU, xrandr didn't see it. So i rebooted, it saw it so i was about to try to use xrandr to output to it, and Xorg appeared to crash but before i entered the command it crashed when I tried to tab-complete the name of the port this new monitor was plugged in. I tried to reboot. and it didn't. It hasn't turned back on since. It makes noises, so at least is turning on and off the fans, when i turn the computer off and on. But i never see anything on any monitor, we tried with basically every configuration possible, No Motherboard logo, no boot menu, no grub. There is now NO output at all from my machine.

I think I need a new motherboard now, and maybe a new GPU too.

Re: linux-5.11.1-arch1.1 has caused my Xorg to Crash from second monitor

It's not likely that you damaged the HW by the described actions (unless you opened the case and fumbled around w/ the HW)
From the context, remove the GPU, see whether you get output on the IGP, if yes, try to re-seat the GPU.

Re: linux-5.11.1-arch1.1 has caused my Xorg to Crash from second monitor

thats a good idea, Im gonna contact my IT friend who's more accustomed to dealing with hardware, as I'm much more comfortable tinkering with software, but don't trust myself yet to mess with hardware issues alone.

Re: linux-5.11.1-arch1.1 has caused my Xorg to Crash from second monitor

We tried to remove the GPU, and no output from the motherboard alone. We then followed someone else's suggestion of trying to reset the motherboard, which also did nothing. Kinda back to square 0.

Does the BIOS present you w/ a re-assuring "beep" when powered up?

Re: linux-5.11.1-arch1.1 has caused my Xorg to Crash from second monitor

I'm having the same problem on the same version. Using a integrated radeon card with a external amd gpu card.
The problem only started happening after upgrading to the latest kernel version.
If I unplug the monitor using the external card, and reboot my computer, it uses the monitor with the integrated card without a problem. But when I plug in the other monitor and try to enable it with xrandr, it crashes.

Re: linux-5.11.1-arch1.1 has caused my Xorg to Crash from second monitor

attempts to send video output to this monitor cause what appears to be an Xorg crash, as The screen goes black except for the mouse, and my mouse and keyboard become unresponsive.

Same pattern?

Let's assume a bug in amdgpu, pass

amdgpu.dc=0 amdgpu.audio=0 amdgpu.dpm=0 amdgpu.aspm=0 amdgpu.runpm=0 amdgpu.bapm=0

to the kernel command line and see whether you can reproduce the issue.
Also run "dmesg -w" while you're adding/enabling the output (make sure to not use a compositor as further indirection, ideally ssh into the system) and see whether you get some kernel errors.

Ftr. "upgrading to the latest kernel version" from which? In particular is this the lts kernel and you went from 5.,4.xx to 5.10 or 5.11?

I don't remember which anymore since it was 2 days ago and I have reinstalled everything due to an unrelated issue. But right now I downgraded to 5.10.11-arch1-1 and it is working fine without any problems.

No. The only thing that happens on power up is the start up of the fans, and the LEDs in my case flash.

Consult the board manual, the flashing encodes a message.

Did you try to replace the monitor cable(s)?
