Weird behaviour with tabbed (suckless) and urxvtd

Using sxhkd I launch a terminal with the command

tabbed -r 2 urxvtc -embed ''

.
This works fine the first time I do it, but once I close that first tabbed instance, I get an error message saying

unable to connect to the rxvt-unicode daemon: Connection refused

.
If I  launch urxvtd through a terminal, I get an error message saying

urxvt: X connection to ':0' broken, unable to recover, exiting.

So far google hasn't been helpful.

Wild guess: what's the output of "hostnamectl"?
