I have a keyboard layout with dead keys: if I press ` then a I get à. Days ago, I noticed pressing the dead key displays it right away, as in MacOS systems. Before, pressing a dead key produced no immediate visual effect; the diacritic was displayed only after the base letter (or space bar) was pressed. As far as I know, this was a pretty standard behavior across desktop environments (as well as bash / readline) and MS Windows for a long time.
I figure this new behavior is linked with the GTK family. I see it in GNOME apps and the GNOME Shell, as well as LibreOffice (configured to use GTK3) and Firefox, but not in the hplip UI or RStudio (both of which use Qt5). The new behavior occurs both on Wayland and X11.
Out of curiosity, could anyone point me to which library update produced the new behavior?

à nice observation. Did not notice it yet.
Indeed, it seems to be gtk related. I can confirm it for emacs, libreoffice writer nd abiword, but my qt-webengined browser still behaves the old way.

The problem comes from GTK3. Downgrading gtk3 package from 3.24.26-1 to 3.24.25-2 solves this problem.

Thank you! I don't really have a problem with this new behavior. It was surprising, but does not distract me. I learned two decades ago to trust GNOME when they change the way we do things.
