[solved] Howto use a M.2 ssd disk on an usb adapter

Hi,

I'm trying to migrate an installation to a new M.2 SSD disk. I moved the old M.2 SSD in an USB adapter (orico), based on Realtek RTL9210 M.2 NVME Adapter but can't see it. fdisk -l does not even see this hard drive!
I installed the new M.2 SSD in the computer (NUC) ans it is seen normally.

in dmesg, about the M.2 SSD installed in a NVME adapter, I can see this:

[113225.217388] usb 1-6: new high-speed USB device number 13 using xhci_hcd
[113225.364982] usb 1-6: New USB device found, idVendor=0bda, idProduct=9210, bcdDevice=20.01
[113225.364993] usb 1-6: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[113225.365000] usb 1-6: Product: RTL9210--VB
[113225.365004] usb 1-6: Manufacturer: Realtek
[113225.365009] usb 1-6: SerialNumber: 012345684517
[113243.196375] audit: type=1101 audit(1614564962.635:454): pid=148886 uid=1000 auid=1000 ses=1 msg='op=PAM:accounting grantors=pam_unix,pam_permit,pam_time acct="manu" exe="/usr/bin/sudo" hostname=? addr=? terminal=/dev/pts/0 res=success'

I don't know what to do at all!

Re: [solved] Howto use a M.2 ssd disk on an usb adapter

Is the old drive definitely a NVME device (not SATA)?

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

Re: [solved] Howto use a M.2 ssd disk on an usb adapter

Oh! Yes! Thank you! It seems to be the case. I switch back my old M.2 disk inside my nuc and I put the new nvme device in the USB adapter and I can see the new disk. In fdisk my old SSD apperas as Samsung SSD 850. This probably this one: SSD 850 EVO SATA III M.2 500 Go! Again. Thank you! I didi miss that possibility. I don't follow anymore tecnologies. This freed my times but it has some drawbacks!
I will migrate installation from my old one inside the nuc! Let start the game now!

Re: [solved] Howto use a M.2 ssd disk on an usb adapter

Hi, I new in this forum. I will take advantage of this thread for ask for help about the same problem.

I use similar adapter "Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL9210 M.2 NVME Adapter" to use the nmve drive as a usb drive, but my system doesn't recognais, I don't know why, using the same commands that use manouchk i can see next:

lsusb
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0bda:0316 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Card Reader

dmesg
[160156.245534] usb 1-4: new high-speed USB device number 96 using xhci_hcd
[160156.382598] usb 1-4: New USB device found, idVendor=0bda, idProduct=9210, bcdDevice=20.01
[160156.382603] usb 1-4: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[160156.382606] usb 1-4: Product: RTL9210B-CG
[160156.382607] usb 1-4: Manufacturer: Realtek
[160156.382609] usb 1-4: SerialNumber: 012345679039
[160156.387180] usb-storage 1-4:1.0: USB Mass Storage device detected

In fdisk doesn't appear neither

I try connect it to a smartphone but nothing.

I come with this issue for some time, sometimes I could mount the unit and start working, in the smartphone always it worked using USB-C to USB-C.

I have a Thinkpad T470, it has USB-C Thunderbolt 3 port, and I tried with this and nothing, it doesn't work. USB-A 3.0 port less.

It happends since that I had other arch distros, I didn't try with others, in Windows 11 and 10 happends the same.

I don't know what do for solve it sad

I would appreciate help from anyone,
Thanks for read
