[solved] Kernel 5.11 -> "soft lockup", system doesn't boot up

I've seen various bugs reported that relate to kernel 5.11, but somehow I get something slightly different. My setup:

I am using luks root volume encryption. When starting, it takes unusually long to do anything and then eventually it says that CPU # something got stuck for more than 23 secs and calls it a soft bug. The system then tries to start but gets stuck with a whole lot of messages (which I can't access via dmesg once downgraded to 5.10) and ends up trying to boot into framebuffer mode, as it seems. The system is unusable, num lock / caps lock still works but otherwise I haven't been able to switch to a console or get any other sort of reaction out of it. It remains stuck in ascii mode with all those messages.

If I boot into Windows (yes I kept that partition) it seems to work normally. Funny thing is that both times I got stuck on 5.11 I was able to boot into linux after starting up windows once. It still gives me the "soft bug" error message and CPU getting stuck for 23 secs or so, but it nevertheless boots into graphical interface and, whereas it doesn't seem to behave quite normally ("thinking pauses", sound issues...), I am able to downgrade to 5.10(-15, in my case) without problems and, what's more, without having to go through all that trouble to boot from installation medium and arch-chrooting into local system (did I mention luks encryption setup). The system works beautifully with 5.10.

I am ok with staying at 5.10 for the time being but wanted to share this experience as 5.11 seems to have generated quite some problems and I didn't find my specific problem in the list. If there's anything I can provide to help sorting this out, just tell me.


Edit: current 5.16.10 kernel seems to have fixed this for now.

...or was it called "soft lockup"? Darn, should have taken notes.

Also, it happens to me both with 5.11.1 and 5.11.2.

...it was "soft lockup". I have tested this with 5.11.1 - 5.11.5, always similar result. Here is the output of 5.11.5:

Heppens to me too. It doesn't actually stop booting, it locks up for 20 secs at a time. You might be able to finish booting if you wait long enough.

What do I need to provide? Is it what follows in the console output? I'd need to type it in from a picture I took, stuff like "RIP: 0010:fw_reset_work_fn+0xB0/0x230 [intel_ish_ipc]" and so on. I'm happy to do that, just I want to make sure I am providing what you ask for.

There's no nullptr deref and no backtrace in that image - it's doubtful that you face the exact same problem. However

Remove the quiet parameter and plymouth and make the watchdog panic. Then post a an updated image of the stack trace.

You could be right. I can actually finish booting but OP seems like he can't.
Should I start a new topic?

I removed plymouth and used default mkinitcpio settings. I used the following kernel options with sd-boot:

options root=PARTLABEL=ROOT rw resume=PARTLABEL=SWAP softlockup_panic=1

But the result was the same. Nothing changed.

which I found proposed as solution in a slightly similar case.

Adding

I usually just restart - but now I went to Windows to check on fast boot and hibernation, disabled fast boot (hibernation was apparently already disabled) and made a proper shutdown. Booting into 5.11.x I had the same issue. Also if I press the power button then for 4 secs and restart I have the same problem. That it worked after I booted into Windows may have been a coincidence as it happened two times back then but just now it didn't work. I also didn't test that in depth because I actually don't use the windows installation other than for testing purposes (it hasn't even seen a network so far). I remember booting successfully into 5.11.x randomly some times, without having applied any changes that I would know of.

I tried now with 5.12.1 and still getting the same "Soft Lockup" error. LTS kernel (currently 5.10.34) works like a charm. Does anyone have an idea where I could start to investigate or what additional information I could provide?

... but my CPU isn't baytrail architecture? I'm running on Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10510U CPU @ 1.80GHz ...

I also verified that microcode updates get loaded.

I thought I had passed random.trust_cpu=on to the kernel via /etc/default/grub, but somehow this doesn't seem to have made it into the grub boot line. I had tested this back then also by manually adding it in grub and I don't remember that it changed anything, but now my system booted up twice in a row when manually modifying the boot line in grub. It still hangs for a while and throws up the soft lockup thing, but it boots (writing this now on 5.12.8-arch1-1).

Update: I tested some more and the system is also able to hang with random.trust_cpu=on at times. But the success rate of booting has increased (dunno if that is attributable to the updated kernel or to the parameter though).

The baytrail bug is actually fixed upstream, but you'll find all sorts of ppl. w/ different architectures reporting on it (good god: please don't!) who are using this workaround, so … ;-)

You can "cat /proc/cmdline" to see whether your parameters apply - editing /etc/default/grub does nothing in and by itself, you need to run grub-mkconfig to actually generate/update /boot/grub/grub.cfg from it.

Forgive me if I don't fully understand what you are trying to tell me - I did add the parameters in grub directly also (during boot, modify command line), but it did not change the behavior. Making the changes permanent is not necessary at the moment, giving it doesn't seem to have an effect. BUT I started to think maybe it's just a broken installation and was about to reinstall. I got myself the newest installation image (which also runs kernel 5.12) and booted off the usb thumb drive. There the "soft lockup" is more seldom and does not prevent the system to boot up. After updating the UEFI firmware and doing a few more boots I have the feeling that the "soft lockup" happens less often (I think like 40% of the boots). In any case this is highly random. And booting off the USB thumb drive excludes any misconfiguration I may have made.

The UEFI has secure boot disabled, but TPM is enabled. If I can provide more input, please let me know. I would really love to get this up and running, as the machine itself is quite a nice piece of hardware.

You hit those freezes when the CPU idles, the cstate impacts that behavior (higher numbers imply deeper sleep, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_ … sor_states )
You could post the system journal from an affected USB boot.

I encountered 3 soft lockups in this boot. I wonder why this happens only with kernel > 5.10... because it ran totally nicely with kernel 5.10.

Re: [solved] Kernel 5.11 -> "soft lockup", system doesn't boot up

Ok, so I did a complete re-install two weeks ago with the latest installation image (which, running kernel 5.12, also produces "Soft Bug" Warnings). I still have the very same behavior. LTS kernel works, current one mostly not (5.13.7). Occasionally it boots through even though it reports a soft bug.

I didn't erase stuff in the EFI partition (which I mount under /efi) prior to reinstall. Is there any chance there could be something left over from a previous install that interferes? Because I have several folders there that relate to a linux installation ("arch", "GRUB" and "GURB", due to a typo). How can I find out which of the grubx64.efi files is actually used? Has that to be done via the EFI setup interface? /me wonders

I suppose it can't have anything to do with the "missing module qat_4xxx" warning that pops up only for kernels >=5.11, as I read that 5.11 just added a driver lacking firmware, whereas 5.10 didn't even have a driver and also couldn't use it (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=263974).
