OpenGL applications render slowly when not active

I'm using Xorg with i3wm and for some reason when I unselect a window that is using my GPU to render the application slows to ~5fps, is there a way to disable this behaviour?

Re: OpenGL applications render slowly when not active

Do you also use a compositor (picom etc.)
Please post your xorg log and output of "glxinfo".

Please test glxgears which will also nicely print the current fps, so we get some data.
Also test the behavior w/ a different WM (eg. openbox) though I don't see where either WM or the driver could lead to this kind of behavior (a gsync output or weird config maybe could, hence the Xorg log, please)
