Tinny sound on Macbook Pro 11,4

Have just brought my MacBook Pro 11,4 (mid 2015) over to Arch Linux, and whilst everything else works a dream, the audio is a bit tinny/not very full-bodied, in comparison to the audio in MacOS. It _feels_ like the bass is dialed right back, but not an audio expert, so it could be anything really. This isn't a problem I've experienced on my other Arch devices (mostly desktops), so wondering if it's something MacBook/laptop-specific. Anyone have any tips or tricks for improving MacBook audio quality? I'm using Pipewire and its ALSA/PulseAudio/JACK replacements.

Cheers in advance.

Re: Tinny sound on Macbook Pro 11,4

So based on ponyrider's suggestion, I got my sound chip with the command

cat /proc/asound/card{0,1}/codec* | grep Codec

(a Cirrus CS4208).

Looking up this model in the kernel docs, there's a mbp11 option. Creating a /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf file containing

options snd-hda-intel model=mbp11

this seems to have improved the sound quality. Thank you!

Re: Tinny sound on Macbook Pro 11,4

When I enter:

cat /proc/asound/card{0,1}/codec* | grep Codec

I get this output:

Codec: Intel Haswell HDMI
Codec: Cirrus Logic CS4208

So it is the same in my case

I don't know if it is helpful but I installed gnome-alsamixer from the AUR:

yay -S gnome-alsamixer

Or whichever AUR helper you use.

With that application, I was able to increase the volume of the 'Bass Speaker' channel, which seemed to make the MacBook sound less tinny.

Unfortunately, I still don't think it sounds right.
Recording the output from both Arch Linux and MacOS and comparing the two sound-waves, would perhaps confirm or deny a difference.
