british pound sign problem in KDE (solved)

Hi.
I have a problem with KDE. when i try to type the british pound sign (£) in any kde application, two strange square characters appear instead of the symbol.
the symbol appears fine in non kde applications and in the console.
i have set up the region correctly, and set the keyboard to british.

does anyone know how to make this work correctly?

thanks,
ad.

EDIT:
I managed to solve this one by re-generating my locales.
as root edit /etc/locale.gen and uncomment lines that began en_GB then run locale-gen.

yep, i feel like a newbie now. smile
