[solved] latest nvidia update broken

During an update to the latest nvidia, nvidia-dkms, or nvidia-utils, something breaks.

During the upgrade, pacman (dkms) states there is no need to rebuild modules as they are current. However after a reboot, Xorg can not find any nvidia drivers and a graphical environment fails to load.

Re: [solved] latest nvidia update broken

Good to know. Perhaps I will delay a little, day or two, before next update. I think fix comes soon if there is a problem. Happened earlier too (as I remember). Downgrading should be a fix for a while if already upgraded.

I use btrfs and snapper. I just rolled back for now.

Re: [solved] latest nvidia update broken

It's not the first time. After installing the drivers, you have to reinstall the kernel package. Then after reboot everything works.

I can't do that. I order to use this machine, I had to roll back a snapshot.

All I can say is the Xorg log said it found no nvidia drivers.

Re: [solved] latest nvidia update broken

Late KMS problem?
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … de_setting
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … _KMS_start

Edit: also don't use static configs, /etc/X11/xorg.conf - certainly not the ones written by nvidia-settings or nvidia-xconfig
In case it's *not* a late kms situation, please post the system journal or dmesg.

Re: [solved] latest nvidia update broken

So the installed package seems local/nvidia-utils 460.56-1 but the posted logs complain about the (current) 460.67 mismatching the kernel module 460.56
Did you downgrade the drivers after the logs and before dumping the pacman -Qs outputs?

Re: [solved] latest nvidia update broken

I solved it. I had the modules set in my mkinitcpio.conf for early KMS but did not regenerate the image after the update. I ran mkinitcpio -P after the update and the issue is resolved. Thanks.

Thanks at all! I had the same problem. The graphical interface didn;t start.        mkinitcpio -p linux          helped a lot.  smile
